Roll out the welcome mat.

Greetings Internet travellers.
The Mote wants you.
Feel free to rest your tired fingers here. Enjoy discussions, catch up on the news from around the world, laugh with us and post your pictures and links. Join a debate or start one.
Most of all, feel welcome.
3. marjoribanks - 4/24/2001 3:03:54 PM
This is intended to be a generally low-volume thread for newcomers to this forum.
Unnecessary unpleasantness will be moved summarily to The Inferno. So will discussion between regulars which have no place here.
This site has always been mainly a very hospitable place, welcoming new ideas and participants. This thread is to meant to reinforce that welcome.
Please join me in welcoming visitors, and guiding them to appropriate threads to talk about what's on their mind.
Also, please assist newcomers with HTML hints in the scratchpad. This interface is easy to use but as most of us know it offers everyone the exciting ability to play with pictures and text to a far greater extent than any other forum on the WWW. Hints on doing this will be appreciated by all.
5. Indiana Jones - 4/24/2001 3:12:41 PM
Notice to all newcomers: Please select a movie star that you would like to have linked to your Mote moniker in the Mote cast and email me with it so I can put it up.
17. RosettaStone - 4/26/2001 3:03:57 PM
I'll be your guide:
But come, young waverer, come, go with me,
In one respect I'll thy assistant be;
For this alliance may so happy prove,
To turn your household's rancor to pure love.
18. sakonige - 4/26/2001 9:02:53 PM
Someone from Table Talk just told me they are having trouble logging in with an existing account. Did a user list not get restored or something?
22. Cellar Door - 4/26/2001 9:58:18 PM
Welcome to the Mote.
Pay no attention to Rosie.
Ace is hysterical, but fun once you get used to his screaming fits.
CalGal is inordinately bossy.
"Poetry" is a lovely thread.
arky is a delight as are ycmeehan, OHIOStopas and The Diva.
glendajean, ronski, rubberducky and I are your Gay Guides.
Don s. too, when he chooses to join us.
And jexter is God.
26. Sticky Mouse - 4/26/2001 10:55:29 PM
This thread seems pretty gay. Is this a gay discussion board?
27. sakonige - 4/26/2001 11:00:57 PM
no
28. sakonige - 4/26/2001 11:02:27 PM
Well, not exclusively anyway. Hetrosexuals are still pretty outspoken here.
29. Sticky Mouse - 4/26/2001 11:02:45 PM
Sorry.
Just wanted to get things clarified right away.
35. marjoribanks - 4/27/2001 9:30:45 AM
Stone,
I am appealing to your better side, if you still have one.
Play away, needle away, be as fatuous as you only know how. But on some other thread. This is meant to be an easy and friendly launching pad for newcomers. You have done nothing to assist in this task, and are seriously starting to irritate even me.
Please do take your insights to another thread. Restrict yourself to friendly greetings here if and when someone new does venture to enter this excellent site.

Sticky Mouse - 4/27/2001 6:37:14 PM Thanks, Marjoribanks. What happened? 65. marjoribanks - 5/2/2001 3:33:38 PM Okay, I'll try to jump-start this thread properly over the next few days. But in the meanwhile it remains the place to welcome and guide newcomers. 66. marjoribanks - 5/2/2001 3:35:24 PM Stone, you can be host for the day. Share your experiences, list cool websites, be entertaining. If you do really well, you can be host tomorrow and the day after. 67. How ya dooo'n????
Are you new? If so welcome. I notice you're already involved in discussion.
Feel free to ask any directions if you need them. Hope you enjoy the site and stick around.
By the way, this thread is not a general discussion thread and is mainly to greet and welcome visitors. Posts that don't fit the thread description will be moved to the appropriate thread. Gratuitous or unfriendly posts will most likely be deleted outright.
If you have a topic that you feel would make a good thread, and are willing to lead discussion, feel free to ask for a thread in New Thread and Feature Suggestions. Good topical discussions are always welcome.
Welcome again, glad you found enough to make you visit again.
I'm also taking an informal survey. See, this forum is always looking for interesting new people to join. It's useful to know how people come here to check it out in the first place.
So, how did you hear of The Mote?
Are MrIncredible and Sticky Mouse new Moties?
Thank you.
Why thank you, Cellar!
I hope people who drop in take some time to look at the features, links, etc. of the site. There are a lot of nifty little details to this place that even I haven't explored nearly enough, and reading back through almost any of the subject threads you'll find a wealth of informative and interesting stuff.
This thread is meant to be a launching pad for newcomers to the Mote. Please restrict comments on thread policy, or general commentary, to the appropriate thread(s).
Thank you.
I like this name better. It's more inclusive of the regulars and will premote converstation better.
It is also now a place to talk about the Internet and the changes it has wrought in our culture and society. Discuss forums here, the pros and cons of extended interaction exclusively through the Internet. Share cool websites and interesting web services here.
New paradigm, starting...............NOW.
If you still do very well, you can have the thread for a week.
And if you prove that in fact you're not theweakestlink, you can have this thread permanently. But work will be involved. Starting..........................NOW.
Starting......................NOW.
I knew we would have problems with thread headlines when Ace started changing the name of his Vanity thread every day.
Before the Internet, what did you do for recreation all day? Do you think you could go without the Internet for, say, five years?
Answer my questions above.
You're really not doing a good job as host-for-a-day and it's been, what, twenty minutes?
It's a problem because we're busy the next few days and my daughter is being confirmed this weekend at our church. We've having a big party for her.
But don't let anyone else post here until I get back to you tonight.
This wasn't supposed to start until Monday you creep.
This thread is also a Welcome thread. For one day, perhaps two, you wear two borrowed hats.
You're responsible for its success. Good luck.
Starting .....................NOW.
If you want someone hosting who regualrly insults people, plagarizes from others like a drunken sailor, and lies about people with great glee, then you have your man.
Isn't that redundant?
You stay as co-anchor until I get an associate to join Mote. Then you walk...
Headline to be: STREAMING MEDIA
subhead: Digital video is the new rock and roll.
Use your executive power and get rid of all these junk posts ASAP. Keep it clean until later tonight when I write an intro.
And I won't forget how you tried to screw me, Peggy Lee.
Veni, Video, Vici
If video killed the radio star, just imagine what it's going to do with the web. But everything's all right, because video is now (whisper it) interactive.
Second post:
It's screaming. It's interactive. It's screaming and interactive. Interactively screaming. Steamingly interactive. Streamteractive. Got it now, or shall I ram it down your throats for another 200 words.
(that's the tease.) Fix everything, my boy, and I get back to mote later tonight.
Visit the nDroid site and you'll find a bizarre house of sideways-scrolling content
You have to go two pages in to see the best stuff.

EFFECT AND ESSENCE IS SUCH A PRETENTIOUS TITLE
Somewhere in here there are pictures of CNN Headline's newest naked newsreader, the "artistic" former actress. I didn't dig deep enough to find it myself.
London agency Design.net has designed a slick new recruitment site for the Royal Air Force. It provides information on RAF careers and an innovative 3D Flash game that puts users in the cockpit of a Harrier jet.
The final version should be less than 200K, and should take under 10 seconds to download on a 56K modem.

SHOT OF LOVE
As Pelle always says, "People who are not responsible shouldn't be hosts."
(Just wanted to give you something to banish to the Inferno.)
The INTERNET EXCHANGE: START ME UP thread wasn't to start until next Monday, after my daughter's Confirmation.
He was supposed to come last night to remove all the earlier junk posts but didn't show.
I'm not going to be able to post much in the next few days but wanted it to get up to a good start.
(BTW, erase this post at some point, ....banks.)
SATURDAY NIGHT YOU
The inside story of the settlement negotiations that fell apart over an apology
The missing...banks isn't here to clean up and the thread doesn't get turned over to me officially until next week.
Give a moderator a break, guys!!
Ha! A break like the kind you give to other thread moderators, looser?
Why the two oos?
I'm trying my best to get this innovative thread up and running and already it's been sabotaged.
This is what happened with the Balkan Civil War thread.
Does anyone have a favorite web site that they would like to share?
