8. ivan osokin - 5/28/2002 1:53:03 PM

Is this an acceptable prize?

A Geek's Dream:
1) Two Star Trek magazines from the early 1990s, one of them the official movie magazine of ST VI.
2) a 1976 Copy of "Star Trek: The Enterprise Logs" from Golden Press. over 200 pages of Star Trek comics from the 60s and 70s
3) A porn Video: "Nymph", from Vivid Video, 75minutes long...features Chasey Lain. Don't know what the plot is though ;)

Please note: i am not a trekkie (i don't remember how i got these, but they've been in my closet) and i don't actually know if the porn is any good...but it's porn after all.

9. Ms. No - 5/28/2002 1:54:50 PM

I think Chasey Lain is Fraaaank's favorite. Somebody better alert him!!

10. Charles Van Doren - 5/28/2002 1:58:20 PM

i've sent you an e-mail but I put it above in the message about my ante.

17. zojak quafeth - 5/28/2002 2:13:36 PM

Love the prize pack so far.

I can see my evening now. Me, wearing some law firm baseball cap, sitting in front of the TV, munchin' on a "heat pack," drinkin' scotch, while I watch Chasey Lain go at it, with Lieutenant Uhura's face cut out of a Star trek magazine and taped on the TV screen over Chasey's face. And I'm throwin' golf balls at the cat to keep it out of the room. I'll be sure to write all the contributors a nice thank you note on betty's stationary.

not the "novel." as to that thing, it was an interesting idea that died looooong before willie nelson and waylon jennings strode thru the morgue. someone else brought in charlie pride. i was gonna use w&w to trim some of the fat, but i've lost interest for now. save it with cum shots if you can. and you can delete the one post referring to w&w if you'd like. I got no problem with that since i'm not gonna use em for anything.

A selection of Kiwiana, including, but not limited to, a cuddly Buzzy Bee and a large jar of Marmite (and if that doesn't scare you all off winning, nothing will).

29. betty - 5/29/2002 8:10:52 AM

OOOOoooh, now I'm really motivated! I want that Marmite!!! Screw my weaving, I'm re-reading the encyclopedia this week!

30. anomieme - 5/29/2002 9:11:47 AM

Daniel,

Just sent you an email with my address. I'll contribute an Amazon gift certificate.

Not sure what your plan is, but I'll be out of town and away from a computer til 10 Jun, so you may have to cut me. If so, I'll enjoy catching up when I get back.

31. DocBrown - 5/29/2002 11:24:43 AM

I am using the assumption that this game will conclude in the middle of summer. With that in mind . . .

I offer a summer car care package worth $25-$30. It will including chamois, wax, soap, and various solvents and lubricants. Exact contents might vary depending on winner, since the harsher chemicals might not be suitable for international shipping. But I'd like to feature products from my home town of Cleveland, including Wheel Magic®, Blue Coral®, Rain-X®, Bleeche White® (anybody out there got white walls?), and PB B'laster® (superior to WD-40®).

If summer will be over before the winner is chosen, I have an alternate prize in mind.

32. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 11:32:38 AM

Matchups (randomly chosen)

CalGal v. Rask
Indiana v. anomieme
alistair v. Diva
bubbaette v. betty
zojak v. Snowowl
Pelle v. ivan
Ms. No v. TBA
Doc Brown v. Laura C

Rules

We get contestants on at an agreed hour.

I post 21 questions, one at a time, on varied subjects.

The first to post a correct response wins the question.

You get one post per question. You get two minutes per question. The posted answer must be within two minutes of the posted question.

The winner moves on (16 to 8 to 4 to 2 to WINNER)

Winner take all.

37. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 12:29:14 PM

Questions:

1) Are you writing them?
2) Is every question worth the same number of points? (in the actual show 21, this was not the case, which is why I ask).
3) How will ties be resolved?
4) Any process for dispute resolution in case there is disagreement about the correctness of the answer (not that I doubt your abilities, but often multiple answers are correct (Virginia and Merrimac is an example), or the source material is wrong, and I have seen disputes arise even when questions are written by masters)?

38. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 12:52:31 PM

1) yes
2) yes
3) there are no ties; first post in wins the point
4) in the interests of moving the game forward, I will make the calls and will entertain any reasonable appeals. I am keeping this in mind, so the questions will be clear.

39. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 12:56:21 PM

Also, in the interests of being clear, all times related to the game are East Coast time, which is minus 5 GMT Mote time.

Again, no match will be held at an inconvenient time for any contestant. There is no rush.

40. theDiva - 5/29/2002 1:05:30 PM

oh crap, me vs. Alistair. Just make sure the questions aren't in French.

41. betty - 5/29/2002 1:16:13 PM

ivan vs. Pelle...that's like having the Lakers and the Celtics play each other in the first round (or who ever the consistently top two teams are in Basketball these days)...nothing else is going to be nearly as exciting as that match up...no no Danny Boy, you are doing it all wrong!

(You're gonna give me really hard sports questions as pay back, aren't you?)

bubba's gonna kick my ass

42. Ms. No - 5/29/2002 1:20:26 PM

S'arright, Betty. Just think, anyone else who wants to sign up only has to ask themselves "Can I take No for the answers?"

Unless it's a mentally deficient 12yo I'm gonna get smoked too. We'll commiserate together over nudie pics, how 'bout?

43. ivan osokin - 5/29/2002 1:21:36 PM

pellenilsson will no doubt cut me up and cook me like so much lute fish.

44. Indiana Jones - 5/29/2002 1:25:29 PM

Rask won the Jeopardy game I had a year or two ago, despite not even participating the entire time, so I wouldn't be dismissive of his chances.

A rules clarification (which may have already been stated): Contestant A beats Contestant B and hence garners Contestant B's entry prize. Suppose Contestant C beats Contestant A. Does Contestant C get everything Contestant A has won up to that point--or just the single prize?

In short, will the eventual winner have all the loot?

45. betty - 5/29/2002 1:31:13 PM

No,

I'm in on the Nudie Pics!

I was really hoping I'd get paired with you...we could have been the slapstick relief.

46. ivan osokin - 5/29/2002 1:33:56 PM

Clarification on the porn video i'm offering as part of my prize: Nymph, featuring Chasey Lain.

watched it last night. not bad. not great. typical of vivid video...a bit too much dialogue and there are moments when you just wanna say, "is anyone gonna fuck at some point?"

but otherwise...not too bad. some decent scenes here and there, especially towards the end. could have done with more action, but what the hell.

somebody may actually enjoy it...at least the first time they watch it. afterwards, i suppose it'll just be fast-forwarding to the good parts.

47. ivan osokin - 5/29/2002 1:35:20 PM

nudie pics???

48. ivan osokin - 5/29/2002 1:35:58 PM

perhaps that should be part of the entrance "fee"...this way the REAL handicaps will show ;)

49. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 1:41:22 PM

Indy

No. The loot is one big bag. It ALL goes to the eventual winner.

Rask, Cal - Your questions are completed. What's a good time for your match?

50. theDiva - 5/29/2002 1:56:02 PM

you sure these matchups were random?

51. theDiva - 5/29/2002 1:56:43 PM

Ivan

your #43 just cracked me up.

52. PelleNilsson - 5/29/2002 2:01:41 PM

ivan

Don't fear. Daniel is an all-American boy. I'm useless at things like 'What is the state capital of Kentucky?' or 'Who was the 12th American president?' or 'Who scored the most home-runs in the 1937 baseball season?' But I'm fairly good at Swedish 17th century history and I'm sure that Daniel, in his wisdom, will factor that in.

53. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 3:21:32 PM

Rask and Cal

I'm available this week to host the first match of "21" -- yours.

How does your tomorrow through Saturday look?

I can't believe I got Rask. He's about the only person I wouldn't feel pretty certain I could take.

I'll ante up a gift certificate to Amazon.

I can make it mornings or evenings. Work is a risky time for any of us, given we could be called away at the wrong moment.

59. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 3:39:20 PM

Good point.

I am available tomorrow evening from 11:00 pm to 12:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time.

I'll offer that slot to Rask by email.

60. CalGal - 5/29/2002 3:41:44 PM

Do you mean 12 am, or have I been writing it wrong all this time?

61. Snowowl - 5/29/2002 3:44:03 PM

Dan,

Are we sending our contributions to you, or directly to the winner? If they go to you, will you let me have your address - my parcel will have to be sent soon as it will take a couple of weeks at least to get over there.

62. ivan osokin - 5/29/2002 3:48:49 PM

CalGal boasteth:
"He's about the only person I wouldn't feel pretty certain I could take."

well if i can summon up a bunch of wrathful bonpo deities to prevent PelleNillson from actually getting his answers posted, and i can simultaneously invoke the presence of hermes in myself, and miraculously squeak by as the winner in our match...i'll be looking forward to the challenge of competing against you. i grew up in manhattan...we can have an east-west showdown.

63. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 3:48:56 PM

No. I'm the idiot.

11:00 pm to 12:00 am (evening). Tomorrow night.

Yeah, go ahead and fill in my ante with the default Amazon Gift Certificate. If I think of something better/different I'll let you know.

66. CalGal - 5/29/2002 3:57:31 PM

I said "pretty certain". I meant just that. Not convinced beyond all doubt, just reasonably sure that if all things were equal, I'd have a better than average shot. Diva had me a bit worried.

67. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 3:58:31 PM

ANNOUNCEMENT

CALGAL v. RASKOLNIKOV is ON!!!!!!!!!

Thursday, May 29, 2002

11:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time.

LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLLLLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!

68. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 3:59:18 PM

"3) there are no ties; first post in wins the point "

I mean a tie game, where at the end of 21 questions, the score is 8 to 8. Unless these questions are incredibly easy, not all questions will be answered correctly in all games. Will you have some spare questions as tiebreakers?

Also, what is the rule on searching the Internet or using a personal reference library for the answers? Are we counting on a gentlemanly agreement not to do this, or is it perfectly acceptable, just with a natural advantage occuring to a person who knows the answer immediately?

69. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 3:59:36 PM

"Diva had me a bit worried."

oh, right. Me and the Village Idiot.

71. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 4:01:52 PM

I used to play trivia games a lot back in college. There is a hell of a lot of chance involved, depending on the questions that get asked. I credit my Jeopardy win as having more to do with common interests shared with Indiana, who was writing the questions. I anticipate more problems with Mr Sickles, as I know next to nothing about basketball and porn.

72. CalGal - 5/29/2002 4:03:13 PM

Rask, my understanding is the latter. First person to type in an answer.

73. theDiva - 5/29/2002 4:03:33 PM

all I know is, I'm gonna mop the floor with that cranky-ass Connor.

74. Snowowl - 5/29/2002 4:03:50 PM

I'm actually good at trivia, but I suspect I will go out ingloriously in the first round, since the trivia I'm good at doesn't involve porn, basketball, or anything American.

75. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 4:04:41 PM

Rask

Oh. A tie game means sudden death. One question.

And you may use all means at your disposal, but the questions are such that Internet searching has risks. It is really a gamble on your part. In two minutes, do you have the time to search, and if you have a guess, can you afford that search, but how educated is that guess (so maybe, you search)?

76. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 4:07:23 PM

I have made a genuine effort to create 21 questions of greater breadth than my meager interests.

77. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 4:09:26 PM

Understood. Thanks for the clarification.

78. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 4:14:12 PM

"I have made a genuine effort to create 21 questions of greater breadth
than my meager interests."

Sorry, no criticism was intended. But back when I wrote questions like this, I found that it took a lot of work to write good questions on topics that I knew nothing about: French poetry, opera, ancient Chinese history, short hispanic legends of the NBA, etc. As such, it is almost impossible not to bias yourself toward your interests. But the effort is of course worthwhile.

79. Daniel Sickles - 5/29/2002 4:19:44 PM

Not at all.

I basically only care for hoops, golf and porn. But my questions are a great deal more continental.

80. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 4:34:21 PM

Uh oh. I know less than nothing about European porn.

81. CalGal - 5/29/2002 4:39:21 PM

But you know, Rask, PE and Banks used to post all those pics of subcon porn queens so we could use International as a reference. Then it's a bandwidth issue.

82. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 4:46:29 PM

I'll get killed on bandwidth. Currently I can't connect to the net faster than 24k.

83. zojak quafeth - 5/29/2002 4:47:10 PM

Well it's nice to see that I will be able to supplement my stupidity with my cable modem.

84. Snowowl - 5/29/2002 5:14:57 PM

You're up against me first off, and I'm on pedal power, so you're dead cert, zojak.

85. Indiana Jones - 5/29/2002 9:10:43 PM

Personally Team Jones considers ourselves just lucky to be in such esteemed company. We intend to play hard and leave it all out there on the floor, but we're really just hoping to make a good show of it.

Our first round draw, anomieme, is a worthy opponent and a fine competitor. Team Jones hopes to earn some respect, give 110 percent, and work our butts off because without a doubt we're the Cinderella underdogs going into this competition.

86. CalGal - 5/29/2002 9:41:22 PM

We're just here to play Quiz Show.

87. Raskolnikov - 5/29/2002 11:23:26 PM

I just want to play them one at a time, and, God willing, I hope I'll help the team.

88. CalGal - 5/30/2002 12:29:19 AM

Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. And sometimes it rains.

I want you to think about that, Rask. You know what they say about thinking. It's good for the ball club.

89. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 9:44:20 AM

Betty

bubba's gonna kick my ass

Thass right, bitch. I'm Darva Conger and you're Martina Navatralova.

90. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 9:45:50 AM

Or whoever that russian lightweight was. (If we get sports questions the match will end with no points)

91. theDiva - 5/30/2002 9:50:35 AM

anna kournikova

92. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 10:53:40 AM

Nah -- I think it was some kind of russkie gymnast that Darva whupped up on.

OK. I'm Tonya Harding and Betty is Paula Jones.

93. betty - 5/30/2002 11:05:02 AM

I'm Tina Turner and you're Ike?

94. betty - 5/30/2002 11:05:39 AM

I'm Kurt Cobaine and you're Courtney Love?

95. betty - 5/30/2002 11:06:38 AM

You are the Dallas Cowboys, the New York Giants etc. and I'm the Buffalo Bills?

96. betty - 5/30/2002 11:07:44 AM

I'm Thomas Hardy and you're Charles Dickens?

97. Indiana Jones - 5/30/2002 11:11:23 AM

In case it's been overlooked, Holly posted in N&Q that she wants to play, which should take up the last slot.

98. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 11:32:42 AM

Betty

More likely -- I'm toast and you're lunchmeat.

99. PelleNilsson - 5/30/2002 11:51:54 AM

I note that ivan sounds very pessimistic re his chances against me. Over here this is known as a Finnish prediction, You downplay your own abilities in order to appear all the more triumphant and praiseworthy after the game is won.

I also note that bubba is playing the same game in #89 and onwards. Nobody can be that ignorant.

100. betty - 5/30/2002 11:54:05 AM

Daniel,

judith want sto know if there will be another round after this one?

Pelle,

be very sure that some people can be that ignorant. I can produce a family member or two if you would like evidence.

101. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 11:55:24 AM

Shhh. I'm trying to lull Betty into a false sense of insecurity.

102. betty - 5/30/2002 12:05:06 PM

bubba,

no need to lull me, I live in a deep and true sense of insecurity

103. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 12:34:38 PM

We have a full slate

Matchups

CalGal v. Rask - May 30, 2002, 11:00 pm EST
Indiana v. anomieme
alistair v. Diva
bubbaette v. betty
zojak v. Snowowl
Pelle v. ivan
Ms. No v. HollyW
Doc Brown v. Laura C

104. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 12:57:28 PM

Are all these matches going to be scheduled sequentially? If so, this could be a long tournament.

And can someone give me some instructions on trash talking? I am not very good at it. I can't understand why I would want to insult someone's mamma.

105. theDiva - 5/30/2002 1:02:32 PM

Momma doesn't necessarily have to be the target, although this is preferred. You can also insult sexual prowess, butt size, intelligence or lack thereof, teeth, body odor, etc.

Like this:

Man, you so stank you make Right Guard turn left.

Man, you so fat, when you wear a purple t-shirt everybody says HEY KOOLAID!

See?

106. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 1:05:45 PM

Your mother is of such ill repute that she thought "Remembrance of Things Past" was a catlog of her former lovers' penises.

107. zojak quafeth - 5/30/2002 1:11:58 PM

Then of course theere's the classic, "Your mother was a hamster and your father smelt of elderberries.

108. theDiva - 5/30/2002 1:20:08 PM

yo mama so old she used to babysit Yoda.

109. theDiva - 5/30/2002 1:20:35 PM

yo mama like a doorknob - everybody get a turn.

110. Ms. No - 5/30/2002 1:27:08 PM

yo mama so old she owe Moses a quarter

111. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 1:30:23 PM

Your father has so little business acumen, that when offered a chance to buy Microsoft for a pittance in the early 1980's he passed it up because he thought it was his penis.

112. theDiva - 5/30/2002 1:35:29 PM

er, Bubb?

113. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 1:36:07 PM

Yuh?

114. theDiva - 5/30/2002 1:36:35 PM

too many syllables.

115. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 2:01:39 PM

Your mother has so many syllables....

116. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:05:08 PM

sigh.

117. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 2:05:13 PM

Ain't it thursday well past 11:00? Where is thishyear matchup I been hearing about?

Part of the fun of quizshows is to see if you can answer the question before the contestants do.

118. CalGal - 5/30/2002 2:11:40 PM

This evening. We can't do it during work.

And btw, that could be a problem. What if someone posts an answer? Since only participants are on the thread, I'm assuming no one would do that. But it should be stated that no one can post during the quiz--clues or something could be given.

119. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 2:12:53 PM

Oh! Well that's past my bedtime.

120. PelleNilsson - 5/30/2002 2:21:37 PM

A very valid point, CalGal. Let us sit our hands during the contest and if we don't, let us be disqualified.

121. PelleNilsson - 5/30/2002 2:22:23 PM

sit on our hands

122. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 2:23:13 PM

Your mamma is so ugly that when she walks into the room, roaches try to step on HER.

123. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 2:24:01 PM

Your mamma is so ugly that even Ace of Spades wouldn't nail her.

How am I doing?

124. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:25:36 PM

Better than Bubba was.

More like this, though:

yo momma got a glass eye with a fish in it.

see?

125. CalGal - 5/30/2002 2:26:50 PM

You so dumb you think Jaws won a Oscar.

126. bubbaette - 5/30/2002 2:29:24 PM

Your mother is so old that her wrinkles have wrinkles.

127. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 2:31:51 PM

You such a fat redneck that you live in a triple wide.

128. PelleNilsson - 5/30/2002 2:33:00 PM

Superfluous 'that'. Got to watch those syllables, babe.

129. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:34:01 PM

hot damn! Go on wit yo bad self, Pelle!

130. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:35:27 PM

Good one, Cal!

Yo mama so old, her wrinkles got wrinkles.

Yo butt so big, you live in a triplewide.

See? Verbal shorthand.

131. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 2:35:44 PM

You so dumb you use superfluous adverbs, bitch

132. betty - 5/30/2002 2:36:05 PM

you so dumb my dog beat you at jeopardy

133. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 2:38:00 PM

Yo butt so fat it get harpooned.

134. CalGal - 5/30/2002 2:38:15 PM

You so dumb you don't want to be a millionaire.

135. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:39:44 PM

hahahahahaha

136. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:40:08 PM

yo butt so big you need a T-3 to download it

137. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 2:41:07 PM

You butt so fat Neil Armstrong stuck a flag in it.

138. CalGal - 5/30/2002 2:42:26 PM

Yo butt so big you can't copy it.

139. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 2:42:30 PM

140. CalGal - 5/30/2002 2:42:59 PM

Daniel, you so dumb you think HTML is a dress size.

142. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 2:43:27 PM

That HTML so fucked up it think Bush was elected President.

143. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:44:16 PM

Man, that snaps older than Yo grandma's kick-start vibrator.

144. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:44:41 PM

my GOD, Sickles, what the hell did you do NOW!

All sarcasm aside, you just missed the end tags. It's a very good table.

147. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 2:45:44 PM

Thanks, Cal

148. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 2:46:14 PM

It only took me a month

149. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:46:36 PM

Ah, the world is normal again.

150. CalGal - 5/30/2002 2:47:09 PM

You so stupid you think "downsize" mean you losin weight.

156. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 2:53:19 PM

That chart so dumb it say v.s. instead of vs.

157. PelleNilsson - 5/30/2002 2:53:55 PM

163. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:56:57 PM

Very impressive, Daniel.

164. theDiva - 5/30/2002 2:57:29 PM

hahahahah

165. Indiana Jones - 5/30/2002 3:16:15 PM

So that means the winner of me and anomiene has to play the winner of Rask and CalGal?

This is like the winner of Spartacus vs. Antoninus gets crucified.

Unless the General has opted for "Obscure Biblical Passages" as a primary question source.

166. ivan osokin - 5/30/2002 3:20:07 PM

PelleNillson's Analysis:

"I note that ivan sounds very pessimistic re his chances against me. Over here this is known as a Finnish prediction, You downplay your own abilities in order to appear all the more triumphant and praiseworthy after the game is won."

actually, it's really the "Dutch Prediction" (i am from manhattan, after all)...the one that says that i'm truly below sea-level and will easily be flooded despite the dikes. don't worry. if i win, i'll gloat like all get out.

167. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 3:41:12 PM

Indy

That's your draw.

REMEMBER - TONITE - 11:00 PM EASTERN STANDARD TIME - THE RUMBLE IN THE JUNGLE --

RASKOLNIKOV VERSUS CALGAL

TO DETERMINE THE FIRST CARCASS OF "21"

168. PelleNilsson - 5/30/2002 3:41:30 PM

Daniel constructs a table! One is tempted to quote Dr Johnson: "It is like watching a dog walk on its hind legs: it is ugly, but one marvels that it can be done at all".

169. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 3:41:37 PM

174. theDiva - 5/30/2002 3:42:52 PM

Anyway, I'm wondering whether the moderator can be bribed.

175. Ms. No - 5/30/2002 3:43:44 PM

Only if you take out yer dentures, Granny.

176. Ms. No - 5/30/2002 3:44:38 PM

okay, sorry that was tres grody, but I couldn't stop myself in time.

177. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 3:53:42 PM

Diva

The moderator cannot be bribed, even if you were to show up at his door clad in nothing but the sweetest bee honey and a Carmen Miranda fruit hat, whispering "Mi, oh, mi pobre salamanca senor, tu muy guapo y mucho kick ass."

Hypothetically.

178. Indiana Jones - 5/30/2002 3:57:04 PM

Translation: All bribes must be offered via email.

179. theDiva - 5/30/2002 4:01:40 PM

Daniel

would black lace help?

180. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 4:08:22 PM

Hypothetically, it wouldn't hurt.

181. ivan osokin - 5/30/2002 4:11:29 PM

hey...if people are gonna start blowing the judges, how about the contestants too? i mean, i'd be willing to "take a dive" for the right price ;)

182. theDiva - 5/30/2002 4:17:00 PM

You mean you and Pelle? Geesh, that's deep.

183. betty - 5/30/2002 4:18:55 PM

Daniel,

i'll give you twice your asking price if you say yes to ivan's offer...I've been waiting years for this moment...SAY YES!

184. Indiana Jones - 5/30/2002 4:19:17 PM

The "take a dive" part has me totally confused as to who's going be doing what.

185. ivan osokin - 5/30/2002 4:24:36 PM

i guess the boxing metaphor wasn't clear. take a dive...fake being knocked out...hitting the canvas.

diva...deep, eh?

betty...keep dreaming.

indy...me, taking a dive (though it won't be necessary...i can say i did, though, to heal my wounded ego).

186. theDiva - 5/30/2002 4:24:54 PM

given Ivan's place of origin, I assume he is employing verbal shorthand for the NY metro colloquialism for cunnilingus, aka 'muff diving'.

187. theDiva - 5/30/2002 4:25:24 PM

oops. Crosspost, and boy was I wrong.

(blushing furiously)

188. ivan osokin - 5/30/2002 4:26:41 PM

ha hahaa...

diva, nice catch. yes, if my opponent was someone capable of receiving a performance of cunning linguistics (i.e., having the muff to dive into) then yes...sure...if they wanna let me win. after all, that fedora has my name on it.

189. betty - 5/30/2002 4:27:31 PM

damn it! you had me very excited.

190. PelleNilsson - 5/30/2002 4:29:00 PM

Well, ivan, if you present yourself with your limbs and vital parts sleek and shining from yak butter I may consider letting you lose gracefully.

191. theDiva - 5/30/2002 4:35:26 PM

sorry, betty. Youse will just have to work that out between you, heh heh.

(yak butter?)

192. ivan osokin - 5/30/2002 4:36:30 PM

hahaha...pellenilsson...do ye think me some kind of tibetan wrestler?

which reminds me of the one phrase i know in tibetan...a phrase that is possibly the most useless of any tibetan phrase (umlauts excluded cuz i can't figure out how to use them here):

"Poh-la, yak yo-ray." which means "In Tibet, there are yaks."

when would you EVER need to say that to a Tibetan?

sorry...the yak butter got me thinking of bhutan, mustang and ladakh and all those places i wish i could visit.

193. theDiva - 5/30/2002 4:53:43 PM

only in the Mote will you get snappin' and yak talk in the same thread.

194. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 10:00:51 PM

Rask, Cal

At 11:00 pm , confirm your presence by a post. I will then post a greeting and announce the start of the game.

Then I will post Question #1.

The correct answer must be given in two minutes (based on the time stamp). Once a correct answer is given, I will then award the point(i.e., "Point Cal" or "Point Rask").

If no correct answer is given, I will so inform you and post the correct answer.

My next post will be the next question.

And so on and so on.

See you shortly.

195. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 10:09:19 PM

Two more questions:

1) How picky will you be on spelling? Should we spend time making sure we spell "Hakeem Olajuwan" correctly, or is a phoenetic guess good enough?

2) Will the next question follow immediately after a correct answer, or will you wait for the two minutes to expire? (Potentially one person could be spending two minutes looking up an answer to a question, while that question gets answered, and several more get asked. Either option is justifiable, it would just be helpful to know in advance.

196. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 10:33:08 PM

1) Not picky. It is not a spelling bee.

2) It will follow a reasonable time after I award a point

So.

195. Daniel Sickles -5/31/02 3:09:19 AM

Question 1: At Cold Harbor, who commanded the Union forces?

196. CalGal - 5/31/02 3:10:19 AM

Grant

197. Raskolnikov - 5/31/02 3:10:44 AM

Grant

198. Daniel Sickles -5/31/02 3:11:14 AM

Point CalGal.

199 Daniel Sickles - 5/31/02 3:12:48 AM

Question 2 - In Hawaii, aloha means what?

197. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 10:55:16 PM

I am here early.

Remember, also, you get one post per question.

198. CalGal - 5/30/2002 10:56:06 PM

So if both people make incorrect answers, there is no second response?

199. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 10:57:07 PM

Exactly. We'll move to the next question.

Since you two are the virgins of "21", any other questions?

200. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 10:58:22 PM

I am here.

201. CalGal - 5/30/2002 10:58:22 PM

I'm as ready as I'll be.

202. Daniel Sickles - 5/30/2002 10:59:11 PM

Okay, Let's play "21".

My next post will be question no. 1

woof.

Nice, nice game Cal. I am also frazzled.

305. Raskolnikov - 5/30/2002 11:59:40 PM

btw, I wasn't questioning judgment on Western Front, just commenting that a judgment was going to be needed, as first names are usually not sufficient, but this doesn't always follow for fictional characters.

306. CalGal - 5/30/2002 11:59:54 PM

That was fun!

Minor quibbles:

I think answering ribs in pairs should have been accepted.

Second, I really was confused when you said I had that point and wasted time rereading my answers.

I've mulled the "Paul" answer, and I think that's okay, but Rask might not.

Great game, Rask. I think we were four seconds apart about 3 times.

307. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 12:00:48 AM

Nice moderating. Thanks for doing this, Mr Sickles. Writing questions is hard work.

308. CalGal - 5/31/2002 12:01:32 AM

But I think we should have a losers round!

309. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 12:03:43 AM

Quick tips:

1) For players: Save all appeals and discussion until there is a break in the game.

2) For moderator: There needs to be a break in the game. I recommend a pause at 10, and 20 questions. That way you can settle any appeals before the final question. It was grueling to do that for an hour straight.

310. Daniel Sickles - 5/31/2002 12:03:55 AM

Quibbles heard and hopefully, my game will get better. I'll try and chat less with the contestants, but given how close it was, I thought it best that you knew that the point you questioned was for certain yours. Similarly, I thought I had to let Rask know that he could not rely on the possibility of the "paul" point.

Again, great match, all.

Saying Goodnite, this is Dan Sickles for "21"!

311. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 12:05:47 AM

"I think answering ribs in pairs should have been accepted."

I personally would have taken it, given that your clarification on "pairs" came before the answer was given.

But I wouldn't have taken "Paul".

However, both were judgment calls under the discretion of the moderator. Neither were critical to the outcome of the game, either.

312. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 12:07:12 AM

And I think we were 4 seconds apart more than three times. As such, I kept cursing myself over every keyboard fumble, knowing it could cost me the game.

Damn close game.

313. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 12:12:41 AM

This might not be the right thread for it, but why can't I increase font sizes? When I try enlarge text, it enlarges some of the text, but not the text of the posts. That Tagalog question cost me (I saw a philippines link, but couldn't think of a PH language that started with I), and I would like to be able to avoid this in the future.

314. CalGal - 5/31/2002 12:14:36 AM

I had a great time and if I hadn't wasted time on fussing the senator answer, I would have gotten Walpole earlier and there's a good chance we'd have been tied. Given that you are trivia champeen of the universe, I feel I acquitted myself honorably.

You're right about questioning things; I should have done that. And I agree about the break.

The answers that haunt me are Bradley and Chambers. Football and porn, I knew them both if I'd let myself think a bit longer, and how often would that happen on those subject?

315. CalGal - 5/31/2002 12:15:49 AM

I don't know. It's probably something to do with the style sheets. Is your font that small?

316. CalGal - 5/31/2002 12:20:14 AM

Oh, and Daniel, you might want to put a link to the beginning of the game so that people can read back.

317. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 12:20:55 AM

Not horribly small. We just moved, and have a bad computer set-up. I am reading what looks like 12 point font from three feet away. I'll play around with it and see what I can do.

For what its worth, 5 questions had a 4 second time difference on response. Another 5 were under 15 seconds.

318. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 12:22:53 AM

The Tagalog one burns me, and I can't believe I spaced Jim Broadbent. I almost spaced henry wallace. I kept wanting to call him wallace- simpson.

319. CalGal - 5/31/2002 12:31:07 AM

You were so long on Broadbent I figured there must have been a power outage and you were gone for the evening.

That's pretty good on the time differences. We were close on most of them.

I had trouble getting into the rhythm of the game at first. You scored three unanswered points twice. I went four and would have been five had I answered the rib question properly, but never got a run going apart from that. The middle game was my strong point.

320. PelleNilsson - 5/31/2002 1:51:12 AM

Nice game. Both contestants were impressive.

Wow. Nice, nice game Rask and Cal.

And good job Mr. Sickles.

And looking at the questions along with how quickly rask and cal answered, I must say that I would have goten SMOKED that round.

I think I'm either gonna need some life lines or maybe some special questions like "what year did zojak's parents emigrate from Greece to Canada?" "How tall is zojak?" etc.

325. ivan osokin - 5/31/2002 8:02:18 AM

328. zojak quafeth - 5/31/2002 8:25:05 AM

Ivan,

Nice try, but two years too late and five inches too short.

Does this mean I start with 2 points?

329. DocBrown - 5/31/2002 10:05:15 AM

I watched most of the match live last night, and I must say it was very exciting!

This game was a real inspiraton, Mr. Sickles. Based on the subject matters selected so far, I will probably be eliminated in the first round. After I'm out, could you use a hand composing questions?

330. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 11:03:59 AM

The match was tough, but it looked more intimidating than it was. I know that about half of my answers were based on research on the net rather than firm knowledge. I can't speak for Cal Gal with any certainty, but based on response times, I would estimate that it was about the same for her. For me, if you see an answer less than 30 seconds after being asked, I knew it right off. If it took more than that, I was probably scrambling furiously to find the answer (although on a few I was banging my head against the wall trying to come up with answers that I just couldn't remember instantly).

331. CalGal - 5/31/2002 11:47:17 AM

I didn't know all that many instantly. I knew a lot of them nearly, but wanted to confirm with research. Two of the ones I thought I knew I should have confirmed.

Some were a combination. For example, I googled that foreign word, the results came up with a Catholic translation of something and several Philipino websites and because I knew there was a language called Tagalog I got it.

I almost guessed Hammerskold for the UN job and I knew there was some other famous UN secretary, so I decided to risk the time to look it up. "UN Secretary" "missile crisis". The moment I saw the letter U I went "Oh yeah, the Burmese joke in 13 days!"

Oddly enough, it was the movie lookups that took too much time--IMDB is incredibly slow these days. Had it not been slow I probably would have taken the time to look up Behind the Green Door on the same principle as I did for the UN secretary. There isn't just one porn star known to the general public, there are two. I can't remember if I came in ahead of Rask on that one.

I really, really should have taken more time on the Superbowl question. I had the time to take; Rask was slower on that one. I did a bad google.

332. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 11:59:52 AM

That was the exact strategy I followed on Tagalog, only I misread the fucking question. I even thought: "damn, my guess would be Tagalog, but that doesn't start with an 'I'".

I had a bad Google on Hammerskjold. I knew he was SG in the early sixties, but I couldn't remember when he died. My hit mislead me, but I was zeroing in on him, not U Thant.

I just went to Superbowl.com for the MVP.

333. CalGal - 5/31/2002 12:26:51 PM

Some strategies--if you've already thought of these I apologize if they are too obvious.

Set your posts per page to a low amount. I used 5. This is particularly important if you have a slow connection time.

Hit the video button often while waiting for the next question. Remember that it's not just time to answer, it's time to seeing the question.

Have an open Google window obviously, and while you're waiting for the next question, clear the search box and make sure the cursor is right there in the window. Then if you need it you can click on that browser and start typing.

Don't go into a link if you don't need to. A Google results list will often give you the answer if you code your search right.

Build your searches wisely.

334. Ms. No - 5/31/2002 12:36:42 PM

I am so gonna die.

Nice match guys! Very impressive and even reading it "canned" this morning I got very tense.

335. Raskolnikov - 5/31/2002 12:44:55 PM

I also had 5 posts per page (in practice I probably could have gotten away with three, as spectators were kind enough not to clutter the page).

I had two other windows open: Google and Britannica. But I never used the latter -having the IMDB up would have been more helpful.

336. CalGal - 5/31/2002 12:52:45 PM

Yes, had I to do it over again I would have had IMDB open and ready to go.

337. Daniel Sickles - 5/31/2002 2:57:09 PM

338. theDiva - 5/31/2002 3:05:46 PM

I know I'll think of this one the next time I'm in the supermarket and will start snarfing so loud everyone will stare.

Great round, Cal and Rask. That was awesome! I would've had to Google the whole damn thing...except I would've got Chambers right. Which shows you what lofty pursuits I typically engage *my* brain cells with.

And yes, betty, sterilization was the answer, though headache and ugly partner have been my greatest handicaps.

485. bubbaette - 6/3/2002 11:40:28 PM

Nah -- I conceed. Congrats, Betty

486. betty - 6/3/2002 11:40:30 PM

488. betty - 6/3/2002 11:42:08 PM

does this mean i have to play Rask?

489. bubbaette - 6/3/2002 11:42:39 PM

I dunno, I'm feeling pretty lame. But it's taking up to a minute for me to refresh, which pretty much limits my use of a search engine.

490. Daniel Sickles - 6/3/2002 11:43:16 PM

Good match, guys. As always, a blast (bubba, I'll be in touch - I need a refill on the hot stuff, if you know what I mean).

Until next time, this is Dan Sickles for "21". Good nite everybody.

491. betty - 6/3/2002 11:43:24 PM

well, geesh, you sure do know how to make a winner feel like a loser.

492. bubbaette - 6/3/2002 11:43:31 PM

I think you play alistair

493. betty - 6/3/2002 11:44:22 PM

It's the Marmite...I'm telling you, that stuff is an amazing motivater!

494. CalGal - 6/3/2002 11:44:50 PM

Betty, do you have cable or DSL, or just a fast connection?

495. bubbaette - 6/3/2002 11:44:54 PM

No prob, Daniel. My jalapenos are coming in to beat the band.

496. Daniel Sickles - 6/3/2002 11:45:25 PM

Bubba

Lame?

I'll tell you lame.

Hosting, with a smug demeanor, while, in point of fact, I fear the pit.

Live a day in my shame, toots.

I'll show you lame.

Or maybe that's lame'?

Either way, adios.

497. bubbaette - 6/3/2002 11:45:54 PM

Really, good job Betty.

498. betty - 6/3/2002 11:47:19 PM

Cal,

No, I just knew all the answers...luck of the draw i guess...well Ok there were a couple I wasn't sure about, I had to look up the amen corner for instance.

(DSL)

499. Snowowl - 6/3/2002 11:48:03 PM

Good fun, ladies. Congrats to Betty and commiserations to Bubs. I'm going to be hampered with a slow connection as well when my turn comes.

500. CalGal - 6/3/2002 11:48:40 PM

I wasn't doubting your knowledge at all; you clearly knew some of the answers. It was the response time that had me asking.

501. Daniel Sickles - 6/3/2002 11:48:42 PM

Snow

While I have you?

What times are best for you in terms of a match?

502. betty - 6/3/2002 11:48:49 PM

bubba,

that's sporting of you...if we played without google you would beat my ass darling, you and everyone here knows it.

Around this time or a little later, Daniel.

504. Snowowl - 6/3/2002 11:50:14 PM

Around this time or a little later, Daniel.

505. bubbaette - 6/3/2002 11:50:54 PM

Betty

That's kind of you. Now if the questions had been on Virginia Government, maybe.

Anyhow, I'm off to the showers.

Night all.

506. CalGal - 6/3/2002 11:52:41 PM

clearly knew some of the answers

Ack. Clearly knew them without looking them up, I mean. It's just in at least one case I saw your post come in at under 30 seconds after the question, which seemed like it had to be DSL, or a lucky refresh.

I think if people have DSL or cable, the other participant might decide that doing it at work might be a better idea.

507. CalGal - 6/3/2002 11:53:31 PM

Oh, and good game to both of you! I forgot the niceties, I was thinking of speed strategies.

508. betty - 6/3/2002 11:54:52 PM

Yeah, I'm gonna go get myu congratulatory fuck...everybody have a nice night.

509. Daniel Sickles - 6/3/2002 11:57:54 PM

betty

Hey.

That's the host's job.

Snow

I'll email zojak and see if an 11:45 pm est start time works for him this week. I'm good tomorrow and Thursday.

Nite all.

510. zojak quafeth - 6/4/2002 7:09:07 AM

Thursday at 11:45 works fine.

A little earlier would work a little better because I'm a very pretty man and need my beauty rest. But if necessary I'll just look a little disheveled on Friday.

511. theDiva - 6/4/2002 8:05:42 AM

"492. bubbaette - 6/3/02 11:43:31 PM

I think you play alistair"

geesh. Throwin in the towel on me already.

Great match, ladies. Sickles, this was a really great idea.

512. bubbaette - 6/4/2002 9:07:36 AM

I'm sorry Diva -- what an asshole I am! (And not a very bright one at that.)

513. theDiva - 6/4/2002 9:10:11 AM

oh stop, it's okay. The match was great, youse were funny as hell to boot. I think Daniel purposely tilted them questions so you'd lose, thus rendering you vulnerable to his charms. He's a slick piece o bidness, that one.

514. bubbaette - 6/4/2002 9:22:18 AM

He already knows that I'll always carry a torch for him, despite his cruel toying with my affections.

515. theDiva - 6/4/2002 9:27:55 AM

I know what you mean, hun. He just whips that mojo on ya and BOOM. Yer plumb ruint for other men.

516. bubbaette - 6/4/2002 9:36:21 AM

And speaking of plumb ruint, you should see how he left my shed!

Match 3 - zojak v. Snowowl - TONITE at 11:45 pm EST

520. PelleNilsson - 6/5/2002 2:34:38 PM

Daniel

ivan and I discussed possible times of convergence in another thread. It looks like the only possibility is between noon and 3 pm (game time) on a Saturday.

I realise that's inconvenient for you, being the time you have the habitual three-martini lunch with the fat-cat clients but what do you say?

PelandDan:

it could also be anytime after 5:30pm EST weeknights...that makes it pretty late for you PelleN, right? would that be 11:30pm?

522. PelleNilsson - 6/5/2002 2:47:07 PM

Yes, I'm reluctant to play that late but let's see what Mr Sickles says about a Saturday game.

523. zojak quafeth - 6/5/2002 2:53:23 PM

Mmmmmm, mmmmm.

I've never had snowowl for dinner before.

I'll be there.

:)

524. Snowowl - 6/5/2002 8:47:05 PM

You might find me a trifle indigestible, zojak. I'm a fairly tough old bird.

525. Daniel Sickles - 6/5/2002 11:25:21 PM

Well, it is almost meal time for someone.

Players.

Check in.

526. Snowowl - 6/5/2002 11:27:17 PM

Don't we still have 20 minutes?

527. zojak quafeth - 6/5/2002 11:27:50 PM

Zojak here, waiting to either choke on the indigestible owl or choke on the questions. :)

606. Daniel Sickles - 6/6/2002 12:15:56 AM

Point zojak

Okay - 11 point mark.

Zojak, before making a judgment call, did I read you to agree that Snow should have gotten the Gorgon question?

If you so agree, Snow will be awarded the point. If not, I'll have to use my judgment.

And God knows no one wants that.

607. Snowowl - 6/6/2002 12:17:32 AM

Nah, it's okay. I'm beaten by speed every time anyway.

608. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 12:18:28 AM

Well you said "the Gorgon" but there were three of them. If you're looking for one, it's me. If you're looking for a complete answer, snow got it. I didn't get confused over the question because i forgot all about the other 2. Since snow remebered, it may have been a little unfair.

I'd give the point to snow if I were you.

609. Daniel Sickles - 6/6/2002 12:19:07 AM

Snow

I strive for integrity here on "21". I'll have no Quiz Show scandal. (g)

610. Snowowl - 6/6/2002 12:19:15 AM

Actually, I would like to know your source for the hottest temp on earth. I know the hottest recorded in the US was in Death Valley, but all the sources I've seen say the hottest recorded on the globe was in Libya.

611. Daniel Sickles - 6/6/2002 12:20:36 AM

I've checked the dictionary and I think the point should go to Snow. I apologize for the loose question.

Okay.

613. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 12:22:58 AM

Ask Jeeves says Libya. My Comptons says death valley. My comptons is 1991. The temp in Libya was recorded in 1992.

614. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 12:23:21 AM

That point should go to snow too.

615. Snowowl - 6/6/2002 12:23:59 AM

You're being extremely gentlemanly, Zo. Maybe you've decided you don't like the taste of old Owl.

616. Daniel Sickles - 6/6/2002 12:24:10 AM

Damn.

Snow may be correct on Libya, but there is an issue.

We will play and address if necessary at the end of the match. As it stands, my questions suck, and Zojak is up 7 to 4, with Death Valley at issue.

Next post is the next question.

617. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 12:24:27 AM

Also got this answer:

Weather wise, the hottest places on earth are the Dallol Depression in Ethiopia and Death Valley in California.

664. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 12:52:50 AM

yes thanks dan and snow.

665. Snowowl - 6/6/2002 12:53:22 AM

I think we would have been a bit more evenly matched if I had a faster connection. I actually knew most of the answers, but my connection is just too slow to compete.

It was great fun though.

Dan, the questions seemed somewhat easier than the last couple of rounds.

666. Daniel Sickles - 6/6/2002 12:53:38 AM

Apologies for the equivocal questions folks. I'm getting hazy in old age. And great game. Hard fought.

I'm Dan Sickles saying . . . . goood night, here on "21"!

Good night everybody!

667. Snowowl - 6/6/2002 12:55:07 AM

Oh, and I forgot. Congratulations, Zojak, and good luck for the next round.

668. CalGal - 6/6/2002 12:55:53 AM

I've been mulling how to get past the connection problems. The best I can think of is a handicap.

669. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 12:57:22 AM

Snow. I agree that some of the questions seemed easier than previous rounds.

I think it's a little better that way though so it's not just a research contest.

The problem really is evening out connection speed though.

I don't know what speed mofdem you have but we were a few seconds apart several times.

It's tough to balance this stuff.

Thanks for the game Dan.

670. CalGal - 6/6/2002 12:57:48 AM

Congrats to Zojak. Snow, you cuddabina contender.

Libya had the hottest temperature ever recorded, in 1922--from what I've read. But it was never officially recorded. Death Valley is just two degrees behind.

671. Daniel Sickles - 6/6/2002 11:09:13 AM

Pelle/Ivan

A Saturday will be fine.

672. PelleNilsson - 6/6/2002 11:28:24 AM

When one browses through the competition one gets the impression that Snowowl was severely handicapped by her longer access time.

However, a closer look shows that out of the 19 questions contested Zojak was right on 16 and won 7 on time, while Snowowl scored 14 winning 4 on time.

673. CalGal - 6/6/2002 11:53:37 AM

Yes, but if Snow won them on time it means that Zojak didn't know the answer and had to look it up. If Zojak won on time--especially when he was posting 20 seconds after the question--it means that Snow hadn't even seen it yet.

674. bubbaette - 6/6/2002 11:56:18 AM

Good game, yall.

Daniel -- send me your address for the hot stuff.

675. Raskolnikov - 6/6/2002 12:51:24 PM

I found that if I knew the answer off the top of my head, I could get an answer posted within 20-25 seconds, even with a 26k connection speed. However, I am in the states. If I recall correctly, Snowowl is overseas (New Zealand), and in every Internet speed trivia game I have played, distance of that magnitude had a significant difference in response time, which might explain that Snowowl's fast responses were usually in the 30-40 second range, with a few exceptions.

But there isn't really an easy way around this. Handicaps for connection speed don't really work because net lag is erratic (Snowowl did get a couple responses in at around 20 seconds).

The best way is to set questions at the right difficulty level. If too easy, it is a speed race on response time. If too difficult, it is a speed race on research. If at the right level, the person who knows the answer will have a substantial advantage over a person who doesn't.

For what it is worth, I thought the difficulty level was set very well in this match. But when you have two people that are fairly evenly matched in ability (as these two seemed to be), even question difficult won't be able to discriminate.
It was a very nice set of questions, except for the two that posed problems, and Daniel handled them well.

A question tip: Avoid ambiguity in the level of detail needed for an answer. For example, instead of "where was the highest temperature ever recorded?", ask "In what country (or state, or national park) was the highest temperature ever recorded?" For the former question "the USA", and "California" both would have been correct (assuming the answer is indeed Death Valley - my answer would actually have been "the Sahara Desert. I don't know if this was correct, but it would have posed problems involving level of detail needed if the answer wanted was Libya".

676. Raskolnikov - 6/6/2002 12:55:32 PM

"Yes, but if Snow won them on time it means that Zojak didn't know the answer and had to look it up. If Zojak won on time--especially when he was posting 20 seconds after the question--it means that Snow hadn't even seen it yet."

However, I don't think we really know this. It isn't a clear line between "knowing the answer" and "having to look it up". Sometimes the thinking goes "the answer is on the tip of my tongue. What the fuck is that guy's name? Shit. Fuck. I know this! Oh yeah, Eugene Debs!" I know this happened to me several times in our game, and it is perfectly possible that several of the differences on time were due to one person having instant recall while the other had a temporary brain freeze.

677. Raskolnikov - 6/6/2002 12:56:18 PM

That was indeed a very nice game, more competitive than what was indicated by the final score. Well played.

678. Daniel Sickles - 6/6/2002 1:04:42 PM

Rask

Thanks for the advice. I'll incorporate for the next match.

Speaking of --

I can do pelle and ivan at noon Saturday, EST.

I can be done at noon but I think ivan mentioned 12.30. Let's see what he says.

680. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 1:15:06 PM

Cal -

Yes, but if Snow won them on time it means that Zojak didn't know the answer and had to look it up. If Zojak won on time--especially when he was posting 20 seconds after the question--it means that Snow hadn't even seen it yet.

Kiss my ass.

I knew the answers to several of those off the top of my head. I don't know how many snow had to look up, and you don't know how many i did.

I didn't even see question numbrer 4 until after snow had posted an answer, because I was chatting, hence the "doh."

Why don't you just leave it at it was a good match. there's no way to ensure that everyone's speed is the same, but don't be a little bitch and imply that I won only because i had a faster connection.

681. betty - 6/6/2002 1:18:02 PM

ivan is away until later today but i think noon is safe, schedule tenatively.

682. CalGal - 6/6/2002 1:24:41 PM

Zojak,

I already congratulated you. If you can't handle discussion of relative advantage without feeling defensive, I suggest you just stop reading the thread for a while.

683. CalGal - 6/6/2002 1:26:17 PM

Rask,

There is nothing wrong with looking things up. What I was pointing out is that if both contestants know the answer, it's a matter of speed. The difference between cable and 33k connection is pretty substantial.

It's not surprising that you--or Snow--could get a question answered 20 seconds after it was asked once or twice. That means that your slow connection happened to hit the database right after the question was asked. But if it hit the database right before the question was asked, then the handicap is substantial. On 21 questions, it's going to hit right after the question was asked a lot more often than right before. Remember, it's not just the time to post, it's the time to see the question.

Although that brings up a possibility. Daniel could post the question right on the 2.5 minute mark.

684. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 1:26:59 PM

Calgal,

If you can't talk without ASSuming half of your conclusions, I suggest you just start thinking for a while.

685. betty - 6/6/2002 2:06:04 PM

shouldn't people who are too dumb or too poor to get DSL or cable knowing that it will benefit them in some dumb ass on-line game be penalized for their stupidity or lack of resources?

686. CalGal - 6/6/2002 2:13:45 PM

Betty, are you saying that Bubba, Rask, and Snow are too dumb, or too poor?

Zojak--and Betty, for that matter: I am not maligning your honor or your intelligence. Nor am I implying that you wouldn't have won otherwise. I have not attacked you, and it seems to me there are other threads where you can be nasty and childish without disrupting conversations. Find one, please.

687. betty - 6/6/2002 2:20:41 PM

Cal,

I don't think Rask, bubba or Snow would take my post as saying either, but you can all you like.

688. betty - 6/6/2002 3:31:18 PM

since we don't allow the general public to post on this thread shouldn't players be kicked off once they have been disqualified?

689. zojak quafeth - 6/6/2002 3:47:20 PM

Cal - Take your own advice. To others on this thread, I apologize. I just got tired of the thoughtless, yet authoritatively shat, crap.

The game is about fun and I again thank sickles for taking the time to run it.

690. Raskolnikov - 6/6/2002 6:30:12 PM

"Although that brings up a possibility. Daniel could post the question right on the 2.5 minute mark."

This is potentially workable, but would be a pain in the ass for the moderator.

691. Raskolnikov - 6/6/2002 6:33:07 PM

"shouldn't people who are too dumb or too poor to get DSL or cable knowing that it will benefit them in some dumb ass on-line game be penalized for their stupidity or lack of resources?"

I agree with Cal, this is insulting.

Not that I expect the game to be handicapped for slower connections in any case. Many is the sport, or game, where better equipment buys an advantage. C'est la vie.

692. betty - 6/6/2002 6:39:20 PM

I agree with Cal, this is insulting

yes, satire can seem that way. perhaps the "dumb ass on-line game" should have tipped you off that I think this entire conversation is stupid.

693. CalGal - 6/6/2002 6:39:46 PM

I didn't think anyone did expect it to be handicapped, nor did I think that the victories were lesser because of bandwidth. It was just a problem I was mulling, particularly in the case of cable vs. speed under 40K, and if one could compensate for it.

Again, the aspect I was focusing on wasn't speed to answer or speed of search--where technique and knowledge play a part--but time to seeing the question. Although Snow lost a lot of sympathy points when she confessed that she didn't set her posts per page to 5. I mean, whaddyagunnado?

694. ivan osokin - 6/6/2002 7:15:52 PM

hi...

just a quick note to say that 12:00pm, EST works for me this saturday...afterwards, the family and i will be heading to the indian cultural center here for a festival, and so regardless of my impending defeat, i will be jovial as the possibility of Galub Jamun will overpower my desire for a fedora.

695. bubbaette - 6/6/2002 10:39:46 PM

Honest -- my slow connection was nerve wracking, but that's not what cost me the game. Betty knew more of the answers than I did. I could have had a lightening fast connection and Betty still would have won.

696. Snowowl - 6/7/2002 3:13:14 AM

I expected to be beaten on speed - the fun for me was in the questions themselves.

As it happened I thought that was a reasonably easy set of questions - I knew most of the answers - guessed one (wrongly), made an error on another but realised too late what I'd done as I'd already clicked on post, and googled for another. If I my connection had been faster it would have been a lot closer match I think. Zojak was a tremendous opponent and a thoroughly good sport.

I was a little disconcerted when a question I knew I'd got right was not awarded to me and of course while I moaned and whined about it to myself I slowed myself up even further. That's not a criticism of Daniel. He's the quizmaster and his judgement is what counts.

Daniel,

I asked earlier but did not see an answer to my question as to what we are to do with our contributions to the prize packet. If we are to send them to you, initially, would you let me know as mine will take a while to get there and I'd like to get it away as soon as possible. If we send directly to the eventual winner they'll just have to wait for a while before my package gets there.

697. betty - 6/7/2002 11:23:14 AM

bubba,

you are too freaking generous girl!

Snow,

mail to that corner of the world has been unbelievalby slow lately...i trade crochet squares with a woman in Australia and it takes us 2weeks to a month to get each other's envelopes. We ain't even talking packages here, and! we send them first class. Unreal!

698. Daniel Sickles - 6/8/2002 11:15:38 AM

I see ivan and pelle are here.

Whenever you want to start, check in.

699. Daniel Sickles - 6/8/2002 11:16:55 AM

ALL

When the whole thing is wrapped up, I'll email you with my address (Snow, I'll email you a little early to give you a head-start on your mailing)

700. ivan osokin - 6/8/2002 11:18:15 AM

just thought i'd pop in and say hello and that i'm about to do an occult ritual to invoke the assistance of a horde of hunchbacked demons, who i will trap inside a massive triangle, and they will have to give me the right answers or else i will dispatch them into the hoary abyss of unimaginable, 4th dimensional hells.

confidentially, i think the demons are gonna be quaking in their slimewrinkly skins as they cringe at my ineptness and anticipate what life will be like inside a fiery torus.

back in a little while...

Ivan 6
Pelle 1

Okay, objections

1) On Yellow and Yangtze, I have them as separate. If you have a different source, I'm all ears. Here is mine: The Yellow River is the northernmost of the major Chinese rivers. Directly to the south is the Yangtze River; south of the Yangtze is the West River; south of the West River is the Red River, much of which passes through modern-day Vietnam

2) Missing the shark question. That's on you, lest I'd get everybody who chatters wanting similar courtesies.

759. Daniel Sickles - 6/8/2002 12:28:29 PM

(and I have the Gulf of Bothnia as the correct answer to 11), but I will research and explain)

760. Daniel Sickles - 6/8/2002 12:30:13 PM

Okay, the Gulf of Bothnia is part of the Baltic. Point Pelle.

Ivan 6
Pelle 2

(Yellow/Yangtze controversy outstanding)

761. PelleNilsson - 6/8/2002 12:32:15 PM

Daniel

OK the the Yangtze decision.

I don't agree that the shark question is on me. I did not chatter, I voiced an objection. If you want objections to be stated at certain points in the game you should say so at the start.

I object to the no points awarded on the last question. That body of water is called the Baltic Sea and nothing else. Maybe your source has the Gulf of Finland. That's just plain wrong.

762. Daniel Sickles - 6/8/2002 12:34:45 PM

Pelle

1) My source is the CIA factbook, which designates the body as the Gulf of Bothnia. Regardless, see my previous post.

2) Yangtze decision Okayed.

3) I'm afraid my position stands on sharks.

Next post -- next question and resumption of the game

Fine game, gentlemen. Apologies again for confusion. But I'm beginning to think that my incompetence is a special charm of "21".

780. Daniel Sickles - 6/8/2002 12:48:05 PM

(and cream or milk would have been acceptable)

781. ivan osokin - 6/8/2002 12:50:03 PM

Thank you so much Daniel and Pelle for a great game. I enjoyed the continental flair, and the demons are all breathing sulphury sighs of relief.

782. PelleNilsson - 6/8/2002 12:51:17 PM

Congratulations ivan! You trounced me good which was no surprise.

Daniel

I didn't know the answer to the shark question so your decision doesn't matter one way or the other. But for future games you may consider stating up front that objections will be received and adjucated after question 11.

783. PelleNilsson - 6/8/2002 12:53:58 PM

adjudicated

784. ivan osokin - 6/8/2002 12:54:08 PM

thanks again. i must now be off...the indian festival and music and sweets galore awaits!

785. CalGal - 6/8/2002 2:02:22 PM

Pelle, I believe that Daniel has mentioned that? That's why there is a break at question 11, which wasn't there in the first game.

Congrats to Ivan, well-played.

786. Indiana Jones - 6/10/2002 1:27:48 PM

This is probably a good weekend for me to play. Sometime after 1 p.m. ET Friday would be best.

787. Daniel Sickles - 6/11/2002 12:50:27 PM

Okay, half way through the first round --

Rask, betty, zojak, ivan

Announcements

a. unless, I hear from them on this thread in the next 24 hours, betty and ivan have withdrawn from the competition

b. so, we have 14 participants, not 16, and two have made it to the second round

1. Raskolnikov
2. zojak

I still need to schedule.

3. Indiana v. anomieme
4. alistair v. Diva
5. Ms. No v. HollyW
6. Doc Brown v. Laura C

If no one has objection, for slots 7 and 8, I propose

7. CalGal v. Snowowl
8. bubbaette v. Pelle

d. When we get to 8, I will the re-draw matchups out of a hat.

e. I am adding a prize to the kitty on behalf of the 4 vanquished players who have been given a second chance: Michael Beschloss' Reaching For Glory and a porno tape (details to follow) to make up for ivan's contribution.

796. Raskolnikov - 6/12/2002 2:09:25 PM

Daniel: I don't think that is quite fair to those who will lose the next 4 matches, who won't get a second chance solely because they didn't play one of the first four games. A few alternatives present themselves:

1) Wait until all other first round games are done, and then select the two single elimination players for round two who had the highest scores in round 1.

2) Randomly select 2 out of the 8.

3) Randomly choose the match-ups for round two, with two players lucky enough to get forfeits (this might not be the only time people back out of the tournament, so you might want to make it easy on yourself by just calling it a forfeit when it happens).
4) Use moderator judgment on which two of the 8 players eliminated from the first round played the best, and can be advanced to the next round in place of ivan and betty.

What happened to ivan and betty anyway?

797. theDiva - 6/12/2002 2:11:50 PM

WRT schedules, I am going to be extremely busy for the next couple of weeks. Most likely I will be able to play on a Saturday morning...how does that look for our esteemed host and my worthy opponent?

798. Daniel Sickles - 6/12/2002 2:11:59 PM

Rask

Great idea. Okay

1. I'm going to finish the first round matches

Indiana v. anomieme
alistair v. Diva
Ms. No v. HollyW
Doc Brown v. Laura C

2. I'm going to pick two names out of a hat from the vanquished 8.

betty and ivan got in a huff and split the scene.

Saturday morning works for me. What is alistair's email again. I lost it.

800. theDiva - 6/12/2002 2:15:16 PM

Saturday the 29th all right with you? Not sure about Connor's address, I will have to look and then send it to you.

i responded to your email, but i guess i have to chime in here to get recognized. i would still like to continue being in 21 (although i love asscracks a lot more than numbers). hopefully, i can go up against someone who's not as civil as PelleNilsson (no fun beating someone so gentlemanly).

and btw dan: my ploy worked. currently, i'm en flagrante delicto with a hippie chick i picked up at the food co-op, wowing her with my harmonic convergence spiel, impressing her with my love of everyone, and getting her totally hot and bothered my knowledge of soy-based products.

806. betty - 6/12/2002 3:31:51 PM

Daniel,

ivan and I have both e-mailed you to let you know that we will play, have you not received them?

My leaving had something to do with nothing that you know about and has been more or less resolved.

I will play, if only because I am rather sure that i will win it all, being motivated by the marmite as I am.

I apologize. I hadn't received your email and when ivan sent me one which seemed equivocal, I was blocked from responding. I presumed, and I hate presumption.

Excellent.

Game on.

Finalists thus far

(ivan, I couldn't be happier for you, and frankly, I'm jealous - lately, I've been reduced to hanging out at the mall with a bag of Sour Patch Kids)

809. Raskolnikov - 6/12/2002 3:56:33 PM

Lucky you. My restraining order won't let anywhere near the mall.

810. PelleNilsson - 6/12/2002 4:33:51 PM

Easy there, Ivan. You are ruining my reputation as a hard-hitting, yet petulant, Eurocentric intellectual snob.

811. ivan osokin - 6/12/2002 4:57:51 PM

PelleNilsson:

i'd take the chidings of a eurocentric intellectual anytime over the fox-news-informed parroting of americocentric non-intellectuals anyday.

besides...someday i hope to be on the other side of the pond as well...away from this 3,000 mile long strip mall, firing range, and tv soundstage.

812. theDiva - 6/12/2002 5:00:30 PM

aaaaahhhh...I knew youse weren't goin nowhere. I seen more than one pissed-off Sicilian in my day.

813. anomieme - 6/12/2002 7:33:33 PM

Daniel,

I'm back a day or two later than expected, but I'm here and ready to go. Any time after 5PM PST is good for me.

Indiana: Sorry for any delay and I look forward to being some small impediment to your first round passage. I'm in a good position since it will be no shame to lose to someone of your obvious talents, and win or lose, I'm in excellent company.

I hope to read back some at work tomorrow.

And now...a good night's sleep.

814. bubbaette - 6/12/2002 9:45:41 PM

I'm glad that Ivan and Betty are back, but must confess that I was hoping for the chance to kick Pelle's dour butt and redeem myself.

815. ivan osokin - 6/12/2002 9:57:13 PM

i had to come back...i didn't want cal to have another chance ;b

816. bubbaette - 6/12/2002 9:59:14 PM

sawright. The dour swede probly would have kicked my ample ass, and then where would I be?

817. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 8:32:24 AM

Argh. I was hoping for a) a win by forfeit in the first round; and b) a reshuffling of the deck in the second round so as to avoid Rask. What a world, what a world.

Gentle anomieme, I do love thee so that I will shortly send thy soul to heaven, if heaven will take the present at our hands.

818. Daniel Sickles - 6/13/2002 10:09:49 AM

Indy, anomieme

How about tonight?

819. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:49:20 AM

After 10 p.m. EST I could do it.

820. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:49:33 AM

EDT, I mean.

821. anomieme - 6/13/2002 7:52:52 PM

Daniel, Indy,

10 PM EDT tonight is good for me. I'll check back about 930 to see if it's a go.

822. anomieme - 6/13/2002 9:36:37 PM

Present and accounted for. Awaiting further instructions...

823. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:43:28 PM

Let's get ready to rummmbbbbllle!!!

824. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:43:47 PM

Is biting an opponent's ear allowed?

825. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:44:46 PM

How about biting the round card girl's ass?

826. anomieme - 6/13/2002 9:46:00 PM

I'll give your ears but a gentle boxing this round. Ha!

827. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:46:05 PM

I want godless cliff!

Bring him on!

828. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:50:41 PM

It's go time!

829. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 9:51:12 PM

I'm ready to be entertained.

830. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:52:06 PM

Just wait until I strip down to my trunks, bub.

That's tonight's real entertainment.

Just sit back and watch me try to work up a sweat.

831. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 9:52:13 PM

But be quick about it -- it's past my bedtime.

832. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:53:21 PM

Who wants to be my corner girl?

Hunh?

833. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:54:45 PM

Where's that pint-sized Vince Mcmahon, anyway?

It's unwise to keep Indy "The Total Package" Jones waiting.

834. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 9:57:09 PM

Who wants to be my corner girl?

Would she be the one to stuff q-tips up yer schnoz and wipe the blood out of your eyes?

835. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 9:58:51 PM

Hey now...

Naw, she'll be towelling off my barrel chest and blowing kisses to me when I enter my victory strut between punches.

836. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:02:02 PM

Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, the pipes are calling...

837. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:02:16 PM

Speaking of unmitigated hooey, where's the fearless quizmeister?

838. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:02:32 PM

I see my opponent is a carnivorous, ear-biting, half-clothed, banter-baiting ruffian, verfy much like one of the fighters in the recent Memphis match.

I,OTOH, will stay fully clothed, calm and cool, and celibate throughout this minor enterprise.

Excuse me, while I freshen up just a bit.

839. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:03:37 PM

She's got a fierce uppercut, I hear.

840. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:04:28 PM

"Celibate"?

Don't try to intimidate me with your 50 cent words and hard to spell name, buster.

You wanna piece of me? You wanna piece of me?

841. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:06:24 PM

Save yer strength. All that bluster might leave you winded.

842. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:06:40 PM

I might want a piece of your "corner" girls after they clean up your puddles, mate.

Winner gets the wenches!

843. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:06:41 PM

eevybody tinks I'm an animal.

But lemme tell ya, when Gus & I was trainin it was da happiest time of my life.

Cept mebbe when I got dat booty contest winner alone in da hotel room.

844. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:09:13 PM

speaking of beauty contest winners, where's Daniel?

845. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:10:26 PM

Somebody check the local whorehouses and pronto.

I've got endorsements to go to.

846. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:12:07 PM

I couldn't reply today until about 730PM EDT, so maybe he didn't know it was a go.
Shame to get Indy Tyson all worked up like this for nothing. Think of the children.

847. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:13:17 PM

The children?

Think of Sickles.

I think I'll have to tear his heart out and eat it.

848. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:14:13 PM

Shame to get Indy Tyson all worked up like this for nothing.

Don't worry -- he'll just go beat the hell out of some innocent passer-by.

849. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:16:54 PM

I think y'all done been stood up.

850. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:17:07 PM

Well that's the fear. Tyson wanted to eat Lewis's children. No telling what our own Indy might do.

851. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:18:21 PM

If the General doesn't show up by 30 after, I say we call it a night. Agreed?

852. Raskolnikov - 6/13/2002 10:18:36 PM

I'll keep things going with some warm up questions.

A) This one legged man was the first person in American history to successfully plea insanity to murder, several years prior to ineptly setting up a salient in the Peach Orchard at Gettysburg. First and last name required.

853. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:18:58 PM

Me, I think it's all hype to jack up the purse.

854. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:19:12 PM

George Pickett

855. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:20:10 PM

Whatsay Indy? IK'll hang around til about 1030 or so.

I can't post during the day, but take it as read that I'm available tomorrow. Same time, same place.

Or...early Saturday morning.

Otherwise, not til next week.

856. Raskolnikov - 6/13/2002 10:20:40 PM

Hints: Northern General, shares a name with a member of the Mote community.

857. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:21:19 PM

Yes, I'll be available tomorrow evening too, same time. If for any reason I won't be, I'll post here and email the host.

858. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:21:31 PM

Daniel Sickles?

859. Raskolnikov - 6/13/2002 10:22:53 PM

Points to Bubba!

860. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:23:02 PM

861. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:23:34 PM

The insanity defense should have given it away.

862. bubbaette - 6/13/2002 10:23:58 PM

Woo hoo! I am the champion.

Now I'm off to bed, taking my championship belt with me.

night y'all.

863. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:24:17 PM

without the fat-fingered f in Charles

Indy: That's a plan.

864. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:24:26 PM

Does that mean Rask is now the corner girl?

865. Raskolnikov - 6/13/2002 10:25:37 PM

Next question: This Roman general wrote a bunch of self-congratulatory missive to the Senate collectively known as "Commentaries on the Gallic War"

866. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:26:21 PM

julius caesar

867. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:26:21 PM

Boy am I slow. Thanks for the practice, Rask.

(Bluffing)

868. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:26:49 PM

There seems to be a pattern to these answers.

869. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:27:06 PM

My next guess...

Francis Urquhart.

871. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:29:30 PM

10:30?

872. Raskolnikov - 6/13/2002 10:29:30 PM

No fair anticipating. Correct on Caesar.

873. ivan osokin - 6/13/2002 10:30:58 PM

rask...are you referring to "Belli Galloi"?

and anyways...this was already in my match with pelle. he said caesar, i said julius caesar...i would have contested, but sickles anticipated and said 'caesar' would be accepted.

874. anomieme - 6/13/2002 10:31:50 PM

Okay. I'm back here tomorrow.

875. Indiana Jones - 6/13/2002 10:32:02 PM

Okey-dokey. I'm checking out. See y'all tomorrow, I reckon.

876. Raskolnikov - 6/13/2002 10:34:31 PM

"rask...are you referring to "Belli Galloi"?"

Probably. I knew he had a Caesar question, but I forget which one it was. I would have skipped it, but dammit, I had a theme going.

877. ivan osokin - 6/13/2002 10:35:52 PM

Bellum Gallicum...i meant.

1. Identify the song title and group:

Talk in song from tongues of lilting grace
Sounds caress my ear
And not a word I heard could I relate
The story was quite clear

Ooh, baby, I been blind
Oh, yeah, mama, there ain't no denyin'
Oh, ooh yes, I been blind
Mama, mama, ain't no denyin', no denyin'

All I see turns to brown
As the sun burns the ground
And my eyes fill with sand
As I scan this razor line
Can I find, can I find where I've been

Oh, pilot of the storm who leaves no trace
Like sorts inside a dream
Leave the path the led me to that place
Yellow desert stream
Like Shangri-la beneath the summer moon
I will return again
As the dust that floats finds you
Will move and search Kashmir

965. Indiana Jones - 6/14/2002 11:17:29 PM

Good game, anomieme. Good sportsmanship, too.

Goodnight everybody.

What was the answer to that A*pi r^2 question? It looked sort of like the formula for a cylindar (pi r^2 * height), but other than that, I didn't recognize it.

969. alistairConnor - 6/17/2002 7:51:56 AM

I posted this in the wrong thread under the wrong name, so that's probably why I didn't get an answer...

Objection yer honor. That's prime sleeping time in my part of the world, and sleep is sacred.

Anything between about 7pm and 1am EST is unthinkable. Any other time, pretty much any date.

970. alistairConnor - 6/17/2002 7:54:41 AM

I haven't been following very well, but it seems we have to chip in to the prize pool.

I was going to suggest a signed campampaign poster from my recent run for French parliament. A great talking point when pinned to the back of the toilet door. I could add to that, several kilos of surplus campaign leaflets, which might find useful employ in the same location.

Alternative, or supplement : a couple of bottles of organic French wine.

971. zojak quafeth - 6/17/2002 8:06:40 AM

What was the answer to that A*pi r^2 question?

I think it's the circumference of a circle.

972. zojak quafeth - 6/17/2002 8:07:31 AM

By the way, nice match. And good questions.

Although now I've got Zeppelin running thru my head.

973. theDiva - 6/17/2002 8:09:54 AM

I can't do those dates and times, either.

Will Saturday morning, the 29th, be too late? I don't want to hold things up. During bidness hours it's just impossible.

974. theDiva - 6/17/2002 8:10:26 AM

oops, yes, nice match.

975. alistairConnor - 6/17/2002 8:13:37 AM

Saturday morning your time would be during my younger daughter Keri's republican baptism party. Sunday morning? Any other morning?

976. theDiva - 6/17/2002 8:16:07 AM

Well, we certainly wouldn't want to interfere with that. Family first.

Mornings during the week are impossible. This weekend I will be out of town...but Sunday morning, the 30th, is dandy for me.

977. Indiana Jones - 6/17/2002 8:38:58 AM

Maybe my browser isn't reproducing some odd characters correctly, but the formula question appears to me as:

X = A * R squared

No actual pi in it. Still, it has a somewhat general appearance to

area = pi * radius squared

which is the formula for the area of a circle.

The circumference of a circle is

circumference = pi * diameter

or

circumference = pi * 2 * radius

My guess of area of a circle wasn't counted, though, so I have no idea what the General had in mind.

978. alistairConnor - 6/17/2002 8:52:49 AM

Sunday morning, the 30th works for me. We'll have to see what the boss says.

It will be after lunch my time. On balance, the booze factor probably works in my favour.

979. Daniel Sickles - 6/17/2002 9:03:13 AM

There is no too late. I'll periodicallt post slots, and if they gte filled, great.

We do it when it is convenient. No rush.

Diva, alistair - Sunday morning, June 30th, works for me - 8:30 am?

980. Daniel Sickles - 6/17/2002 9:04:33 AM

Mr. Sickles,

I'm happy to announce that I'm back online at home and free to entertain your scheduling requests. I don't have any set appointments for particular evenings so it might be best to find out Holly's availability first.

993. theDiva - 6/28/2002 5:41:06 PM

I'm gonna need it.

994. HollyW - 6/28/2002 11:06:04 PM

Hey, Ms. No!

I'm more flexible than not. The sooner I face my certain humiliation (#1, I've no clue how to open a second window so Googling won't happen; #2, I used to regularly flunk Current Events quizzes in high school EVEN WHILE I read the paper every day and knew vaguely that something was going on, somewhere, but who? and how do you spell that?)...the quicker I can wipe the sniffles on my sleeve and carry on with life.

995. CalGal - 6/28/2002 11:07:58 PM

You have no clue how to open a second window? Are you on IE? Control N. Are you on Netscape? File->New Window. (Same as in IE, but it's quicker to type Control N).

Then you might want to set your posts per page to 5, to take less time to load.

996. HollyW - 6/28/2002 11:13:51 PM

'Kay, thanks. That could help.

But did I mention...

#3, I suck at surfing the Net. I can't find a thing.

Ooooo, this will be a good wake-up kick in my ass! The Proverbial Learning Experience.

(Maybe Daniel can just dumb down the questions, huh...)

997. CalGal - 6/28/2002 11:17:02 PM

Is your home page set to google? That's a good thing for this because you can just click Home when you're done with a search, for the next one.

You are here to comply, to be in agreement. You are not, these agents of sin and of Satan will tell you, here to do anything, or rather you are not here to ask what to do, or why. The only action, the only agency permissible is the secret compact of compliance you are expected to make with an order so vast it is nearly invisible, the secret surrender you are expected to have made of your own specificity in the name of an anti-human unjust anti-egalitarian anti-democratic ideology that masks its brutality in the guise of an Individualism that enforces conformity and a Freedom that exists within a desperately circumscribed arena of economic terror, scarcity and selfishness.

1122. PelleNilsson - 6/30/2002 9:37:38 AM

Congratulations Diva. And Alistir was also not bad.

A well-fought innings.

1123. betty - 6/30/2002 9:37:51 AM

wow, that was an amazingly competitive game...I almost feel bad that I'm gonna have to kick Diva's ass in the next round.

Oh well, I'm over it. :-)

1124. Daniel Sickles - 6/30/2002 9:38:59 AM

So far, the following have made it to the second round

1127. theDiva - 6/30/2002 9:41:36 AM

and thank Sickles as always.

1129. Daniel Sickles - 6/30/2002 9:44:55 AM

Diva

I don't know. Since I don't have to decide the issue, I'm not going to.

Very Solomonesque of me.

"Baby? What baby?"

1130. theDiva - 6/30/2002 9:45:15 AM

no, seriously, you're still producing brain cells whereas mine are dying at an alarming rate.

1131. theDiva - 6/30/2002 9:45:57 AM

hahahahaha

yeah, that's you, Solomonesque. Bearded and berobed.

1132. betty - 6/30/2002 9:46:17 AM

Wow, great game! Congrats to both of you.

1136. HollyW - 6/30/2002 10:44:55 PM

That was a great game. All these games have been enjoyable to read through.

I'm working 3-11pm on Monday, I won't be home until who knows when, midnight at the earliest (I'm EDT). That may be too late.

1137. zojak quafeth - 6/30/2002 11:31:29 PM

Hello all.

Very nice game.

OK, I better go pull out a couple of encylclopedias for round 2.

1138. bubbaette - 7/1/2002 8:29:14 AM

Good game, Alistair and Diva.

1139. Ms. No - 7/1/2002 11:46:43 AM

Wow! Great game!

I will be available as soon as I finish reading the entire Encyclopedia Britannica.

Holly, you are going to kick my ass. I just want you to be prepared for a ridiculously easy victory. I know nothing but how to run my mouth.

I'm available evenings by 9pm EST all this week...I think. Oh, well, not on the 4th. I could do it in the morning that day but only MY morning which would be well into beer-thirty for Mr. Sickles on the East Coast so the 4th is out I suppose.

1140. DocBrown - 7/6/2002 9:44:22 AM

Pardon my absence, I just got back from Seattle.

Have we heard from Laura C?

1141. Daniel Sickles - 7/8/2002 11:03:49 AM

Laura C, Doc

Per my emails, here are open dates for your match

If they don't work, no big deal. We can do another day. Let me know.

1142. HollyW - 7/11/2002 12:21:46 AM

Daniel, Ms. No,

I can do either Monday. Let me know. I've never given my email here...it's msratchedrn@hotmail.com.

My contribution to the prize pool will be a kitchen witch and something ridiculous from the shop of Laurie Cabot, the Official Witch of Salem, Massachusetts. How's that for regional flavor?

1143. Ms. No - 7/11/2002 12:54:38 AM

Either Monday is also fine with me. I'm not likely to be any smarter in 10 days than I will be in 3. :-)

1144. Daniel Sickles - 7/16/2002 12:02:11 PM

Ms. No, Holly

Monday. 7/22/02, 11:00 pm EST. Be there.

1145. HollyW - 7/16/2002 2:22:11 PM

Gotcha.

1146. Ms. No - 7/16/2002 4:28:44 PM

Right-e-o!

1147. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 12:31:03 PM

oh, shit. That's tonight, huh?

Can I delope?

1148. HollyW - 7/22/2002 10:46:55 PM

Nope.

Don't worry, you'll mop up the floor with me. I
1) Have consistently gotten two correct answers in each of the previous Twenty-One games, except for the CalGal-Rask game. For that game I got one

2) Even with hand-holding, I have not been able to open a second window

3) I'm newly pregnant, so not only do I have an early case of placenta brain, I will probably fall asleep at halftime

..so take heart, Ms. No! (And note how cleverly I managed to relate my expectant state to this thread. Shameless, shameless!)

1149. Daniel Sickles - 7/22/2002 10:50:36 PM

Ha ha ha ha.

MsNo. Check in.

1150. bubbaette - 7/22/2002 10:54:42 PM

Is Ms. No a no show? Say it ain't so.

1151. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 10:57:13 PM

Nah, I'm here.

Can I pee first?

1152. Daniel Sickles - 7/22/2002 10:58:27 PM

Sure. Just pee in yer chair, you pervert.

You have 5 minutes.

1153. HollyW - 7/22/2002 10:58:41 PM

The nerves got you, eh?

1154. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 10:58:42 PM

I'm back

1155. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 10:59:18 PM

Now can I vomit?

I'm thinking a full body purge might help.

1156. HollyW - 7/22/2002 10:59:37 PM

High colonic?

1157. Daniel Sickles - 7/22/2002 10:59:38 PM

Okay.

Everybody's back. In 1 minute, question no. 1

1158. HollyW - 7/22/2002 11:00:11 PM

Eeek!

1159. bubbaette - 7/22/2002 11:00:12 PM

Dang

Thought I might get a second chance to show my inabilities.

1160. Daniel Sickles - 7/22/2002 11:01:47 PM

Take the best military man you have, though, and just tell him that I've been watching and listening to these stories for 30 years before the Armed Services Committee, and we are always sure we've been attacked. Then, in a day or two, we are not so damned sure. And then in a day or two more, we're sure it didn't happen at all!"

1165. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:05:14 PM

12) Who said "Sic semper tyrannis" and what had he done prior to saying it?

1214. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:34:34 PM

1215. HollyW - 7/22/2002 11:35:16 PM

Yep. I just Googled it.

1216. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:36:27 PM

Yeah, I Googled and saw the name and assumed

1217. HollyW - 7/22/2002 11:37:00 PM

Do we even need a halftime?

Ms. No 10
Holly 0

1218. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:37:32 PM

Are you on DSL?

1219. HollyW - 7/22/2002 11:37:55 PM

Arky should be in my slot, dammit. She's always up late.

1220. Daniel Sickles - 7/22/2002 11:38:24 PM

Point - and game - Ms No.

Holly, if it were a fight, I would have stopped it. But if it is any consolation, I think I'm in love with you.

1221. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:39:05 PM

She's been fighting that bronchial infection the last couple weeks.

1222. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:40:44 PM

Good game, Holly. To be perfectly honest I got lucky in preparation and I have a very fast connection. I knew maybe 4 of those answers without looking and one of them was the frickin' Mormon that I got wrong anyway.

1223. CalGal - 7/22/2002 11:40:49 PM

I thought you meant Holly and was going to say no, she's pregnant!

Nice game, Ms No.

1224. HollyW - 7/22/2002 11:40:53 PM

I hope I succumb with good humor, anyway.

I knew I was sunk. I have no head for names or specifics, only generalities. That's why I stay off of most of the threads here. I imagine I would just slow things down for everyone.

I hope you had some fun, Ms. No. You missed only ONE! That is impressive, for any of these matches.

1225. Daniel Sickles - 7/22/2002 11:43:01 PM

For Twenty-One, this is Daniel Sickles saying . . . Good Night!

1226. HollyW - 7/22/2002 11:43:12 PM

I have cable. The computer is slow tonight. God knows what my husband has been doing to it lately.

I Googled some, and the answer was always there when I got back. Sigh.

1227. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:43:35 PM

Thanks, but I just counted and I knew 3 and a half answers (half for the Smith)

I'm building a shrine to Google.

1228. HollyW - 7/22/2002 11:44:23 PM

Thanks, Daniel! It was deeply humiliating, but fun anyhow. Maybe I should carry that thought over to the Sex thread.

1229. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:44:50 PM

Thanks, Sickels! G'night!

1230. Ms. No - 7/22/2002 11:45:48 PM

hahaha, now who's the pervert?

1231. theDiva - 7/23/2002 7:30:49 AM

Good match, congrats Ms No!

1232. Daniel Sickles - 7/23/2002 1:01:35 PM

Okay.

Last match of the first round is LauraC v. Doc Brown.

How about July 29, 2002 at 11:00 pm ET?

1233. betty - 7/23/2002 1:34:29 PM

Congrats Ms. No...I knew you was bluffing.

1234. Ms. No - 7/23/2002 1:51:03 PM

If I was really cool I'd just keep quiet and agree, but, honestly, I got lucky on my searches. I counted on the likelihood that I would know, at most 3 real answers, so I was prepared to search for everything.

1235. DocBrown - 7/24/2002 9:05:36 AM

I can be available July 29 at 11:00 PM ET. I know all the right answers to every question. Any incorrect answers are obviously the result of bugs, hackers, and sunspot activity.

1236. Daniel Sickles - 7/24/2002 11:51:06 AM

Anyone got any info on LauraC? She no return my email

1237. theDiva - 7/24/2002 11:52:20 AM

I suspect foul play.

1238. zojak quafeth - 7/25/2002 9:53:19 AM

give it a week. If she still no return you email, give the win to docbrown and let's move on to round 2.

1239. Laura C - 7/25/2002 10:20:57 AM

I haven't gotten an email, but I hear Yahoo's been unreliable lately.

I can do Monday at 11 pm ET. I will try to lose quickly and with a modicum of grace.

1240. Daniel Sickles - 7/25/2002 1:13:15 PM

We are on.

1241. Daniel Sickles - 7/29/2002 10:50:45 PM

I'm locked and loaded. Check in when ready.

1242. DocBrown - 7/29/2002 11:00:03 PM

Hey Ridley, 'ya got any Beemins?

1243. Daniel Sickles - 7/29/2002 11:01:21 PM

Think I got me a stick.

1244. DocBrown - 7/29/2002 11:02:14 PM

Well loan me some, I'll pay 'ya back later.

1245. Daniel Sickles - 7/29/2002 11:05:11 PM

Fair enough.

1246. Daniel Sickles - 7/29/2002 11:07:49 PM

Laura's like every date I've ever had.

Non-existent.

1247. Daniel Sickles - 7/29/2002 11:08:51 PM

We'll give her until 11:15 pm and then try and reschedule. She's probably stuck on the highway.

1248. DocBrown - 7/29/2002 11:10:13 PM

Well, I'm ready. Ask me anything, as long as it's about care and feeding of DeLoreans.

1249. DocBrown - 7/29/2002 11:12:19 PM

This actually turns out to be a bad night for me. I am at a disadvantage because my wife is out of town.

1250. DocBrown - 7/29/2002 11:13:30 PM

Wife out of town
+ Doc Brown
= Doc Brown happily indulging in junk food and beer.

1251. Daniel Sickles - 7/29/2002 11:13:43 PM

Doc

Damn. Sorry to be keeping from the Cheetah III.

1252. DocBrown - 7/29/2002 11:17:29 PM

I'm more of a Cougar XR-7 guy myself.

1253. Daniel Sickles - 7/29/2002 11:18:49 PM

Me, I like the Mach 5

Okay, Chuck, back to your Pop Tarts, Schlitz and cable porn.

We'll get back with Laura when we can.

1254. DocBrown - 7/29/2002 11:20:55 PM

A-Okay.

This is Whiskey-Kilo Two-Eight signing off.

1255. Daniel Sickles - 7/29/2002 11:22:14 PM

And out.

1256. Laura C - 7/30/2002 9:25:13 AM

My apologies - had a power outage in my apartment last night, knocking out my computer and the reminder I had thoughtfully set for myself. I will spare you the details of fuses and such, and forfeit.

1257. Indiana Jones - 7/30/2002 9:31:36 AM

Nay.

1258. betty - 7/30/2002 11:05:34 AM

Oh no, that won't do...(my post in the Cafe was a joke...who the hell could get that worked up over marmite?)

1259. theDiva - 7/30/2002 11:41:12 AM

oh, no, Miss Laura, you gotta suffer like the rest of us.

1260. Laura C - 7/30/2002 1:36:57 PM

Eek!

Oh, I suffer. It was HOT last night.

I will forfeit or take a shot; just let me know which.

1261. DocBrown - 7/30/2002 11:27:08 PM

Sorry, Laura C. You missed a golden opportunity.

My wife will be back as of tomorrow. Looks like you'll be facing Doc Brown on fresh spinach salad and banana-orange-mango smoothies instead Pop Tarts and Schlitz.

Good luck.

1262. ivan osokin - 8/5/2002 1:33:11 PM

so is there a scheduled time/date for this long-awaited final match of the first round? i'm anxious to see who gets to be the next to drink from the can of whoop-ass.

and have the remaining matches been decided yet (i.e., who's facing off against who?)?

1263. Indiana Jones - 8/12/2002 12:51:28 PM

I'm going to be absent from the Mote for a while. If this game gets going again, Daniel, please notify me via email.

Thanks in advance.

1264. Daniel Sickles - 8/16/2002 10:53:50 AM

Will do.

21 is on hiatus for the summer. The re-runs are on the sidebar.

1265. DocBrown - 8/22/2002 11:17:28 AM

In that case I might need to rethink the prize I offered. It's a summertime thing. Still, the game might end next spring, making my prize appropriate again.

1266. Daniel Sickles - 9/3/2002 11:28:59 AM

Summer's over.

Doc and Laura C - How does Monday, 9/9 work?

1267. DocBrown - 9/11/2002 3:41:03 PM

Dan,

Sorry I didn't check in sooner. I can be ready any time.

1268. theDiva - 9/19/2002 2:51:08 PM

bump

1269. theDiva - 9/19/2002 3:03:22 PM

Sickles my dear,

per request:

"404. judithathome - 9/19/02 2:59:07 PM

Diva, while you're bumping 21, ask Sickles when he's gonna finish this thing!"

1270. Daniel Sickles - 9/20/2002 11:12:58 AM

No rush.

Laura C seems to have fallen off the edge of the earth

September 24, 2002

I'm available at 10:00 to 11:00 pm EST

1) Doc? Does that work for you?

2) Laura C's slot is open effective noon tomorrow, EST.

First come, first served.

1271. theDiva - 9/20/2002 11:29:46 AM

1272. DocBrown - 9/21/2002 2:40:17 PM

The 10:00 timeslot is better for me thatn 11 anyway. By very strange coincidence, you might catch me with my wife out of town again. I'll be stocking up on Schlitz tonight.

1273. DocBrown - 9/24/2002 5:03:20 PM

So what's the deal?

Will there be a clash of the trivia titans tonight or not?

This afternoon my wife left on another business trip. It's Schlitz time.

1274. Daniel Sickles - 9/24/2002 6:32:37 PM

Doc

I can't get no one to take you on. This place is jexster's ghost town, I'm afraid.

I'll try again next week.

Enjoy the solitude and ths suds.

1275. DocBrown - 9/25/2002 8:38:11 AM

Hokay.

1276. bubbaette - 9/25/2002 9:01:25 AM

Judith said she'd play doc.

1277. theDiva - 9/25/2002 9:13:42 AM

1278. DocBrown - 9/28/2002 10:28:31 PM

Umm, Diva?

That looks an awful lot like cheering.

1279. bubbaette - 9/28/2002 10:31:00 PM

Diva's a generally cheerful person.

1280. DocBrown - 9/28/2002 11:50:36 PM

Oh, I'm not worried about her disposition. It's her dispassion that concerns me.

1281. judithathome - 9/29/2002 9:03:39 AM

For my ante, I'll thrown in a CD of Willie Nelson's called Stars & Guitars featuring Willie and other artists doing some of his music so the country overload won't be too much and some Texas chili fixin's and recipes.

1282. DocBrown - 9/30/2002 8:43:19 AM

I like Texas chili anyway.

So when is it going to be?

1283. judithathome - 10/1/2002 2:06:31 PM

I can do this anytime this week or next...I thought my modem was kaput but some wizard fixed it over the phone!

1284. DocBrown - 10/1/2002 4:05:37 PM

I'm pretty flexible, too. Monday through Thursday preferred. Not during Junkyard Wars if possible.

1285. Daniel Sickles - 10/1/2002 5:03:48 PM

Doc, juditha

Monday, October 7, 2002 - 11:00 pm EST?

1286. judithathome - 10/1/2002 5:11:10 PM

Fine by me.

1287. bubbaette - 10/1/2002 8:19:15 PM

Doc

Have you seen Monster Garage? Mike loves that show.

1288. DocBrown - 10/1/2002 10:14:16 PM

Just a couple of minutes. My evenings have been very busy with the project I'm discussing in "Notices and Queries."

It does look like a great show. I plan to become a fan.

1289. DocBrown - 10/1/2002 10:14:53 PM

Daniel, it's gotta be 11?

Okay. I'm there.

1290. Daniel Sickles - 10/7/2002 5:41:16 PM

Doc, Juditha

See you tonight.

1291. Daniel Sickles - 10/7/2002 5:50:06 PM

Whoops.

Juidtha's modem is busted.

Game delayed.

1292. theDiva - 10/8/2002 7:47:24 AM

aw geez.

1293. DocBrown - 10/8/2002 2:02:40 PM

This is incredible. I'm certain that the next time the match is scheduled the problem will be on my end. My computer will get struck by lightning or something.

1294. theDiva - 10/8/2002 2:05:16 PM

how do we know you aren't sabotaging your opponents? Hmmmm?????

1295. judithathome - 10/15/2002 3:23:16 PM

Sorry for the delay but at least I got the busted modem and the kidney stone out of the way at the same time.

1296. DocBrown - 10/19/2002 12:16:02 PM

Welcome back to cyberspace, Judith.

I hope you're feeling okay.

1297. judithathome - 10/24/2002 12:53:23 PM

Okay, I think I'm back on now for good. Right after my last message, the connection went out again and didn't get fixed til yesterday.

I told these guys three weeks ago that I thought it was squirrels chewing on the lines and they all pooh-poohed it...well, guess what it was? Yep....squirrels.

1298. judithathome - 10/27/2002 9:44:27 AM

Sickles, I just sent you an e-mail...

1299. judithathome - 10/27/2002 10:38:07 AM

I could do the match this week on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday nights. After that, I'm gone for 10 days so do whatever...

1300. judithathome - 10/30/2002 11:27:12 AM

Ulgine has offered to take my place in the match-up with Doc Brown.

1301. Daniel Sickles - 11/2/2002 4:40:49 PM

Sorry 'bout the delay.

I'm out of pocket until the week of the 11th, but can preside over the last first round match (Juditha v. Doc) the evening of the 11th, 12th or 14th.

Doc and Juditha - pick a date and we can do it at 10:00 pm to 11:30 pm EST.

1302. Daniel Sickles - 11/2/2002 4:41:46 PM

1303. DocBrown - 11/4/2002 2:46:06 PM

I'm slightly biased toward Monday, November 11th (Independence Day in Poland should be lucky for me) and away from Wednesday, November 13th (I watch both Full Metal Challenge and Junkyard Wars on Wednesday evenings). But I could deal with any of them.

1304. judithathome - 11/8/2002 8:28:42 PM

Monday is fine with me...pick a time and post it here. I'm good to go!

1305. DocBrown - 11/9/2002 12:56:18 PM

How about it, Daniel?

1306. Daniel Sickles - 11/11/2002 5:31:37 PM

I'll see youse guys tonight at 11:00 pm, EST.

1307. judithathome - 11/11/2002 5:33:21 PM

See ya'!

1308. Ms. No - 11/11/2002 5:53:10 PM

Best of luck to you both!

1309. judithathome - 11/11/2002 10:57:05 PM

I'm here.

Already had my laughs from Moe & Larry in Politics.

1310. Daniel Sickles - 11/11/2002 11:02:43 PM

Doc?

1311. Daniel Sickles - 11/11/2002 11:15:25 PM

Hmmmm

Maybe I confirmed a little late.

I'll pick an alternate and post the new date tomorrow.

1312. judithathome - 11/11/2002 11:16:28 PM

How long do we wait?

I can check in here any night this week (up to the weekend) at 11pm EST if Doc doesn't show tonight and if you can get in touch with him to set up a specific night.

1313. judithathome - 11/11/2002 11:17:13 PM

Well...whatever.

1314. theDiva - 11/12/2002 7:51:24 AM

*SOB*

1315. DocBrown - 11/15/2002 2:56:39 PM

Unbelievable!

I checked in Monday night before I hit the sack and my message was still the last one in the thread. I didn't dream I'd miss the game.

Well, I'm here now, and I'll check periodically over the weekend.

Actually, as frustrating as it is, it's also a little amusing. Imagine the letdown if I get blown out in the first eleven questions! The pressure is on, and I'm ready! I don't know the meaning of performance anxiety!

1316. judithathome - 11/15/2002 3:02:39 PM

Well, I'd just like to get my public humiliation over with....

1317. DocBrown - 11/21/2002 8:07:28 PM

. . . the pressure builds . . .

1318. judithathome - 11/21/2002 9:50:34 PM

I think he's skipped out on us, Doc.

1319. Daniel Sickles - 11/22/2002 11:56:29 AM

Actually, no. I'm just juicing ratings (okay, okay - I forgot my Mote password)

I can do Sunday, 11/24 at 11:00 EST

OR

Monday, 12/2 at 10:00 EST

1320. judithathome - 11/22/2002 12:02:45 PM

Set it up with Doc and let me know...either is fine with me.

E-mail us both when it's finally decided, just in case... if that's not too much to ask.

1321. judithathome - 11/22/2002 12:03:14 PM

er...please. (Didn't mean to sound so snippy.)

1322. theDiva - 11/22/2002 12:07:08 PM

yeah, let's get this party started!! I can hardly wait to claim the Marmite! I'm gonna sham-slam-bam that Betty!

1323. DocBrown - 11/22/2002 2:32:50 PM

Both slots are a tad late, but I'm more inclined toward Monday at 10.

Are we on, Dan? Please confirm before Monday.

1324. judithathome - 11/22/2002 2:46:06 PM

Monday at 10pm EST works well for me, too. (That's a week from this coming Monday, right?)

1325. Daniel Sickles - 12/2/2002 10:17:46 AM

Tonite.

10 pm EST

DocBrown v. Ulgine Barrows.

1326. betty - 12/2/2002 3:48:39 PM

Look at that little thing, 5'2" in 6" heels, thinking she can sham-slam-bam me.

(That's my Marmite, don't make me stab your hand with my fork!)

1327. Ulgine Barrows - 12/2/2002 8:53:42 PM

Ha ha. Yo marmite!

1328. DocBrown - 12/2/2002 9:41:23 PM

Did someone say marmite? Is it breakfast time already?

1329. Ulgine Barrows - 12/2/2002 9:56:25 PM

hi DocBrown! Here's wishing you good luck and a good game for us all.

1330. DocBrown - 12/2/2002 9:57:09 PM

Assuming this thing happens tonight, here's an interesting tidbit:

I first showed up to play this round in July. Now it's December, and I live in Cleveland. Quite a difference. My keyboard is chilly.

So that I may roll up my sleeves and go apeshit on the keyboard, I've got a small electric heater running next to me. In my 82 year old house, this leaves the very real possibility that I'll blow a fuse at any moment. Total darkness. Complete computer crash. Instant defeat.

Can it get any more suspensful?

1331. Daniel Sickles - 12/2/2002 9:57:19 PM

Check in, punks.

Remember.

1. I'll post the question

2. One of you will post the answer.

3. I'll post an award of the point.

4. In about 60 seconds, I'll post the next question.

5. They'll be a break at the tenth question.

6. If you have objections, hold them until then.

1332. DocBrown - 12/2/2002 9:58:29 PM

Good luck to you too, Ulgine.

May winner of this round go on to total victory!

1333. Ulgine Barrows - 12/2/2002 9:59:02 PM

And at last but a few shreds left on the staffs, (and all in
silence) And the staffs all splinter'd and broken.

I object!

1361. Daniel Sickles - 12/2/2002 10:21:03 PM

Excuse me. Point Doc.

1362. DocBrown - 12/2/2002 10:21:13 PM

Jean-Jacques Rousseau

1394. Daniel Sickles - 12/2/2002 10:47:47 PM

Okay.

That was a ragged first half.

My apologies. I'm out of practice. The lot mis-tally was my bad; I screed up on the song; and fudge was stupid.

I'm at Doc 7 - Ulgine 1.

Any objections, other than to my crappy moderation?

1395. Daniel Sickles - 12/2/2002 10:49:01 PM

Shit.

Point Doc.

Doc 8 - Ulgine 1

Please confirm my count as I recount.

1396. Ulgine Barrows - 12/2/2002 10:49:21 PM

Yes! I object to it all!

No, I'm having fun. And you?

Although I am quibbling about the better half regarding True Grit. I was going to put Iwo Jima.

1397. DocBrown - 12/2/2002 10:50:09 PM

It's your game, Daniel. For the record, I think you're doing a fine job. The questions and answers will be here for Moties to view for a long time. If you're satisfied, I'm satisfied.

1398. Ulgine Barrows - 12/2/2002 10:50:27 PM

Well wait a few minutes, I am not used to this 5 per page stuff.

1399. Daniel Sickles - 12/2/2002 10:51:30 PM

Two minutes until the next question.

1400. DocBrown - 12/2/2002 10:51:34 PM

Thanks, Daniel. This game's gotta be a lot of work. Those were some fun questions!

(Negative phototaxis indeed.)

I'd like to thank my wife for this victory. She gave me my cable modem.

1419. Ulgine Barrows - 12/3/2002 12:30:14 AM

OK, husband has been put to sleep due to my mysterious powers and I still say we should have put Iwo Jima. Yes, we should have, and he agreed with me eventually and promised me all sorts of things but still no cable modem. winky

Mr Sickles, again I say it was a fun game, if you didn't much like this one in particular, well one thing I learned from sports is, there is always the next game.

Negative phototaxis. Y'all crack me right up. How you ever found that one, DocBrown.... you've got mysterious powers of your own.

Tell ya what, I am most disgusted that I spelled Tennille correctly yet got the grand ole rock n rollers question wrong and misspelled my beloved Beatle's names, I KNOW all of the lyrics of Pete Townsend's Empty Glass. I'm singing along to them now, but it was a blank-out moment. I crumbled under the fun. Thanks again.

1420. theDiva - 12/3/2002 8:57:52 AM

great match! Glad to see the thing still alive.

And betty needs to look out or I'll bite her ankles.

(then again, she might like that.)

1421. DocBrown - 12/3/2002 9:20:44 AM

Negative phototaxis. Y'all crack me right up. How you ever found that one, DocBrown.... you've got mysterious powers of your own.

No mystery. I'm here right now looking at all the questions. Then it's just a simple matter of hopping in the DeLorean and giving myself the answers last night.

Google? Where we're going we don't need Google!

1422. Ms. No - 12/3/2002 12:59:47 PM

Great match! Congratulations Doc!

1423. betty - 12/3/2002 1:34:40 PM

Congrats Doc!

Diva, you're so short you can't ride the tilt-a-whirl!

1424. theDiva - 12/3/2002 2:09:01 PM

nuh-uh.

I'm so short I can play handball off the curb.

1425. judithathome - 12/6/2002 10:12:31 AM

Jeez, where are my manners! Congrats to Doc Brown!! It probably would've been a clean sweep had I played. Good game, Ulgine and Doc!

1426. Ulgine Barrows - 12/7/2002 12:20:25 AM

Jeez, where are my manners! Congrats to Doc Brown!! It probably
would've been a clean sweep had I played. Good game, Ulgine and Doc!

Eh? Am I misunderstanding? Judith, if you wanted things delayed, you should have said. Postponement was always an option, wasn't it?

1427. judithathome - 12/7/2002 12:35:05 AM

Jesus, I was complimenting you two on a good game. Sometimes a compliment is just a compliment, ya know?

I meant that Doc would have wiped the board with me, Ulgine. You did great! I am thankful I was spared the humilation of not even knowing how to spell the Captain's singing partner!

1428. Ulgine Barrows - 12/7/2002 1:07:14 AM

Lyin, cheatin, hurtin, that's all you seem to do....

Judith, it was your breaking line 'Jeez, where are my manners!'

I believe I said I was out of line asking you for the spot. That was your chance to tell me NO. You did not. Fuck off forever on this particular point, in other respects I am always,

Yours, Ulgine

1429. Ulgine Barrows - 12/7/2002 1:16:59 AM

I think I am being a butthead beyond reason, judithathome. Sorry. Rings, pearls, I'll give you all, but not any hat of mine.

NEXT ROUND

Rask v. Indy

Diva v. betty

zojak v. ivan

Ms. No v. DocBrown

NEXT SLOT AVAILABLE

MONDAY, DECEMBER 9, 10:30 pm, EST

The first two combatants to post availability get the slot.

Reminder of the rules (I seem to have forgotten rule no. 3 in the Doc/Ulgine battle)

1. First to post correct answer gets the point

2. It's a one-shot deal - you post the wrong answer, you're done.

3. 2 minutes per question - no point awarded after 2 minutes elapses without a correct answer provided

1431. theDiva - 12/7/2002 3:24:25 PM

I'm not available Monday. I can play next Saturday morning between 9 and 10 a.m.

1432. Raskolnikov - 12/9/2002 10:44:24 AM

Dan: I recommend posting a series of times over the next couple weeks that you will be available. Participants can then say which times they can make, and matches can be set.

I could make it tonight if Indy is around.

1433. DocBrown - 12/11/2002 9:45:52 AM

I'll volunteer to go any Monday or Tuesday evening.

1434. Ms. No - 12/11/2002 1:51:30 PM

Tuesdays are out for me, but Mondays work fine.

Wanna try for the 16th?

1436. Ms. No - 12/11/2002 2:38:11 PM

Oh whee. I can start getting nervous again, now.

1437. DocBrown - 12/11/2002 3:46:07 PM

1439. DocBrown - 12/12/2002 10:28:43 AM

I'll probably be drinking an Elliot Ness. Yes, we Clevelanders have a beer named after the legendary warrior of Prohibition.

And since it's Decmeber and I'm in Cleveland, my hide could use a good tanning. I can't wait.

1440. Ms. No - 12/12/2002 11:52:46 AM

Hey, wait, I may have to charge you for that, Doc.

1447. alistairconnor - 12/14/2002 6:58:35 AM

I think I've only watched one match live, but it's fun to watch the replays too. Just like the Louis Vuitton Cup.

1448. DocBrown - 12/16/2002 10:21:31 PM

I have arrived.

1449. Ms. No - 12/16/2002 10:24:34 PM

1546. Daniel Sickles - 12/16/2002 11:32:28 PM

Coming up --

Rask v. Indy

Diva v. betty

zojak v. ivan

This is Dan Sickles for "21" saying 'Good night everybody'!

1547. DocBrown - 12/16/2002 11:34:27 PM

BTW, As I was typing in the Tom Hanks answer I got hit by a barrage of popups, then suddenly my machine did a complete power down. I have no explanation. I opened the browser as it was still rebooting, and at this moment I am facing a screen with GIGANTIC fonts. Only a few lines of text fit on the screen at once.

But I make no excuses. Mrs. No was the better player by far, and would have won even if I had two computers with dedicated DSL lines. Future opponents beware, she's a powerhouse!

1548. Ms. No - 12/16/2002 11:37:04 PM

She's a nervous wreck whose edge is massive amounts of caffeine, but I thank you for the compliment!

1549. Ms. No - 12/16/2002 11:38:06 PM

You need to resize your desktop it sounds like. I'm currently getting "screen shudder". The display jiggles every few seconds like trolls are stomping around inside.

1550. Ulgine Barrows - 12/17/2002 12:51:35 AM

Nice tango, you two. Mr. Sickles, well done, as well.

1551. theDiva - 12/17/2002 9:01:32 AM

betty v. Diva (if their schedules permit)

1557. theDiva - 1/25/2003 11:00:50 AM

Sickles, if 9 is too early, what about after lunch?

1558. betty - 1/25/2003 1:18:24 PM

Diva, Sickles...

earlier is better for me. Ivan has a class after lunch on Saturdays and that means i'd be doing the quiz with my little Weed girl running around. Of course I'd still womp Diva's skinny little ass...

1559. theDiva - 1/25/2003 2:18:37 PM

Obviously you haven't seen my current ass.

1560. bubbaette - 1/25/2003 3:58:19 PM

Diva ain't got no ass compared to me, but Betty still whomped mine. The girl is an ass whomping machine. Not that Diva can't hold her own. Let the ass whomping commence.

1561. theDiva - 1/25/2003 4:29:51 PM

Bubb!

(sniffle)

1562. ivan osokin - 1/25/2003 6:03:12 PM

let me know what dates and times are available. i'll see which works best and go with it.

y'know, if betty and i can become the last finalists in the championship, we could just screw each other and see who comes out on top ;)

1563. theDiva - 1/29/2003 9:12:10 AM

Sickles.....oooooohhh Siiiiicklesssss.....

1564. alistairConnor - 1/29/2003 10:31:34 AM

Well Diva, you certainly "held your own" against me... and whomped mine!

Hey... If I said you had a beautiful ass... would you hold it against me?

1565. theDiva - 1/29/2003 12:05:05 PM

prevert.

1566. theDiva - 1/30/2003 2:19:57 PM

Darlings, I'm sorry. Something has come up (no, not Connor) and I won't be able to play on Saturday. Maybe next week?

1567. judithathome - 2/13/2003 2:09:07 PM

So is this game just over or what?

1568. DocBrown - 2/25/2003 8:39:33 AM

I hope not.

1569. theDiva - 3/12/2003 1:33:53 PM

bump ba da bump bump

1570. DocBrown - 3/14/2003 9:33:49 AM

Two bits!

So Sickles has been gone for almost two months now. Maybe we ought to invent our own questions.

1571. theDiva - 3/14/2003 9:37:52 AM

what he needs is a good heinie waxing.

1572. DocBrown - 3/14/2003 9:41:19 AM

Well DUH!

Who doesn't need a good heinie waxing? But if you start on Sickles, you'd better bring enough wax for the rest of us.

1573. theDiva - 3/14/2003 9:43:33 AM

Uh-uh. I'm a one-heinie woman.

1574. Ulgine Barrows - 3/15/2003 12:43:33 AM

I have lots of questions, Mr. Sickles, shall I give it a whirl?

1575. Daniel Sickles - 3/17/2003 2:50:05 PM

Ulgine

I am out of pocket until early April. Your offer to assist is greatly appreciated. I will get back on the stick in April, so any matches you can conduct prior would be great.

Here is where we stand.

Rask v. Indy

Diva v. betty

zojak v. ivan

Ms. No v. DocBrown

Gracias.

1576. theDiva - 3/17/2003 2:57:58 PM

I just love it when he speaks Spanish.

1577. Ulgine Barrows - 3/24/2003 4:39:22 AM

Early April. My favorite time of year - I'm an April Fool.

The next match will be 27 March PM, Rask v. Indy , speak up if there are scheduling objections. Exact time will be announced after I see replies.

I just love it when he speaks Spanish, too.

1578. Indiana Jones - 3/25/2003 8:59:26 AM

I cannot participate this week.

1579. Ulgine Barrows - 3/25/2003 4:52:59 PM

Thanks for the reply, anybody else?

1580. Ms. No - 3/25/2003 5:35:34 PM

Well, Doc and I already went.

I think betty can be reached through her email link as host of the Sex thread and Rask is pretty diligent about checking his as well --- linked in TV & Movies.

1581. betty - 3/25/2003 6:59:09 PM

e-mail is best way to get me or ivan, you can e-mail to me for ivan.

1582. Ulgine Barrows - 3/26/2003 3:44:07 PM

Of the matches Mr. Sickles mentioned,
Rask v. Indy
Diva v. betty
zojak v. ivan
Ms. No v. DocBrown

That last pair have already played. Indy can't make it this week, so it doesn't matter what Rask says. I'll hazard a guess that if Diva and betty aren't jumping on a game before Sickles gets back, zojak and ivan won't, either, even if I email them.

Sickles, I will email you my list of questions, perhaps you can use 'em.

1583. Ms. No - 5/8/2003 12:41:59 PM

Due to his busy schedule Host Daniel Sickles is retiring from active duty here at Twenty One. He will be sorely missed.....except maybe by the custodian responsible for cleaning the Llama droppings out of the dressing room every night,

We have two options at this point:

- Find another host
- Retire the thread without a winner

I see that Ulgine Barrows has expressed some interest in posing questions. Perhaps she might host?

In the meantime I'll leave Mr. Sickles name on the marquis so that we can shamelessly use his dubious star-power to attract audience members.

1584. Daniel Sickles - 5/8/2003 8:05:30 PM

Oh, well, if the people demand it . . . (yes, Chris, I'm flighty)

I'm happy to do it, and I'm thrilled if Ulgine will assist, but I'd like a check in from all remaining contestants, who are:

Rask v. Indy
Diva v. betty
zojak v. ivan
Ms. No v. DocBrown

1585. Indiana Jones - 5/9/2003 8:19:46 AM

May 27 - May 31 would be a good window for me, if Rask is going to be around then.

1586. theDiva - 5/9/2003 8:27:39 AM

Saturday mornings or weekday evenings after 7 are best for me.

1587. zojak quafeth - 5/9/2003 11:38:26 AM

I'm in. But out of town The week of the 25th.

1588. Ms. No - 5/9/2003 11:58:17 AM

Sickles you wouldn't be a celebrity if you weren't prone to fickleness. I'll have Elrod re-install the llamas. Glad to have you!

1589. Raskolnikov - 5/14/2003 5:09:01 PM

Indy's window should work for me. Some evening after 9:30 EST would probably be best.

1590. DocBrown - 6/4/2003 10:07:55 AM

Daniel, I'm already out of it. Technically, Mrs. No is the current leader, since she's the only one to win a second round victory.

1591. Daniel Sickles - 6/4/2003 10:20:41 AM

Doc

Ivan and betty have not checked in. I'll give them another week. Then, I'll get creative with the six remaining.

1592. Ulgine Barrows - 6/5/2003 11:37:11 AM

Sickles, I emailed some questions. Did you get them? Hope they're of use.

1593. Indiana Jones - 6/5/2003 1:05:45 PM

Ulgine: Did you cc me on that email?

charles_vandoren@resourceful.com

1594. Ulgine Barrows - 6/5/2003 3:54:47 PM

No.... wait, I can just put 'em here!

#1. Who was the host of Quiz Show?

1595. ivan osokin - 6/25/2003 12:36:48 AM

hey...i'm still alive. absent from the mote, yes. but i'll be in for 21. i want that goddamned hat!

1596. Ulgine Barrows - 6/25/2003 1:26:59 AM

Don't get your hopes up. I think this thread will be retired without a winner. C'est la vie.
