I learned a lot about my grandfather while producing the documentary, Mr. Conservative Goldwater on Goldwater. Our generation of Goldwaters expects government to provide for constitutional protections. We reject the constant intrusion into our personal lives, along with other crucial policy issues of the McCain/Palin ticket.

My grandfather (Paka) would never suggest denying a woman's right to choose. My grandmother co-founded Planned Parenthood in Arizona in the 1930's, a cause my grandfather supported. I'm not sure about how he would feel about marriage rights based on same-sex orientation. I think he would feel that love and respect for ones privacy is what matters most and not the intolerance and poor judgment displayed by McCain over the years. Paka respected our civil liberties and passed on the message that that we should conduct our lives standing up for the basic freedoms we hold so dear.

PITTSBURGH -- A 20-year-old woman who was robbed at an ATM in Bloomfield was also maimed by her attacker, police said.

Pittsburgh police spokeswoman Diane Richard tells Channel 4 Action News that the victim was robbed at knifepoint on Wednesday night outside of a Citizens Bank near Liberty Avenue and Pearl Street just before 9 p.m.

Richard said the robber took $60 from the woman, then became angry when he saw a McCain bumper sticker on the victim's car. The attacker then punched and kicked the victim, before using the knife to scratch the letter "B" into her face, Richard said.

Richard said the woman refused medical treatment after the assault, which happened outside the view of the bank's surveillance cameras.

The robber is described as a dark-skinned black man, 6 feet 4 inches tall, 200 pounds with a medium build, short black hair and brown eyes. The man was wearing dark colored jeans, a black undershirt and black shoes.

In the U.S. Senate race, Sen. Saxby Chambliss holds a four point edge over challenger Jim Martin (D), 48% to 44%.

Lawsuits Starting Across the Nation Proceeding to Avert Potential Constitutional Crisis, Possible Civil Unrest, and Confidence in Elections; Lawsuits are being filed in Eight States Seeking to Require Barack Obama to Provide Certification of Birth in U.S. or Be Removed as Presidential Candidate on State Ballots.

Seattle WA. 10/22/2008 — Lawsuits in eight states as of this writing– Hawaii, Washington, California, Florida, Georgia. Pennsylvania, New York and Connecticut, are seeking judicial authority to force the certifying or decertifying of Senator Barack Obama’s qualification to run as a candidate for President as a natural born U.S. citizen. Previously, two lawsuits have failed to force the certifying documents from Obama.

Philip Berg’s months-long lawsuit in Federal Court in Philadelphia reached a dramatic plateau yesterday as Mr. Obama and the Democratic National Committee (DNC) failed to respond to the court that Mr. Obama is not a natural born U.S. citizen and therefore not qualified to run for office of President of the U.S. They admitted to Obama’s non-qualification by their failure to respond to a 30-day court ordered discovery in which Obama and the DNC were ordered to answer a petition by Berg. Berg is a lifelong Democrat in the Pennsylvania Democratic Party who has sought to ratchet up the legal pressure as Obama and the DNC has continually delayed providing certifying documentation of Obama’s birth, which he claims to have been in Hawaii.

A lawsuit in Honolulu in the First District Court is seeking a court-order to open Obama’s secret birth records. Obama has thus far neglected a Freedom of Information request for the records at two hospitals in Hawaii. Lawsuits in Washington and Georgia are seeking state Superior Courts to force the states’ Secretary of State, as the chief state elections officer, to perform their state constitutional duties to require original certifying birth records from Mr. Obama that would verify his birth in Hawaii.

Article II, Section 1 of the U.S. Constitution reads: “"No Person except a natural born citizen, or a citizen of the United States at the time of the adoption of this constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that office who shall not have attained to the age of thirty five years, and been fourteen years a resident within the United States."

There are numerous allegations to Obama’s claim of natural birth in the U.S. on the web and in the media, all raising suspicion and doubt as to Obama’s actual place of birth and qualification to run for president. Some of the assertions to which Obama “admitted” on Berg’s suit are: he was born in Mombassa, Kenya in 1961 while his mother, Stanley Ann Dunham, was married to Barack Obama Sr., a Kenyan; when his mother, divorced from Obama Sr, moved to Indonesia and married Lolo Soetoro, an Indonesian, Obama was adopted by Soetoro and became an Indonesian citizen; while in Indonesia, Obama had his name changed to Barry Soetoro; Obama traveled to Pakistan in 1981 under an Indonesian passport when Pakistan was a no travel zone for Americans; Obama had “admitted” to receiving illegal contributions in his campaign for president. Additionally, there is an allegation that Obama’s Kenyan grandmother claims that Obama was born in Kenya; Muammar Gadhafi, leader of Libya, has publicly claimed that Obama was born in Kenya and studied in Muslim schools in Indonesia. Obama has also “admitted” to hold citizenship in another country (the U.S. Constitution forbids dual citizenship).



Non-partisan and independent reviews and examinations of Obama’s birth certificate as shown on his official website has evidence of tampering and in any case does not list any of the points of information commonly found which would make it traceable and verifiable such as hospital, doctor, size weight, foot prints etc.



Interestingly, all these state lawsuits would be dropped if Mr. Obama would simply provide the requested documents supporting his claim of being born in Hawaii.

Ronald Goetsch says he had a heated verbal exchange with Takehara over allegations of voter improprieties in other states and the role of voter registration groups and asked her numerous times to leave his property.

Takehara says Goetsch grabbed her by the back of the neck and was pounding her head and screaming.

Goetsch tells The Journal Times in Racine that he did pull the woman’s hair and regrets his actions.

Police say their report on the incident will be forwarded to the Racine County District Attorney’s office when it’s complete.

Obama & Democrats Move To Seize 401(k) Plans


US News & World Report published a story yesterday morning in which they uncovered little discussed legislation that would effectively eliminate 401(k) plans and create a second quasi-Social Security system in which the government would take control of the retirement plan savings of millions of Americans.

According to US News & World Report along with Congressional Records, a House subcommittee is considering the advancement of legislation that would ELIMINATE 401(k) plans and create as an alternative a "Guaranteed Retirement Account" for every worker in the United States. Under the plan, Americans' existing 401(k) accounts would be transferred into the GRA and would grow at an average yield of around 3%. The subsequent loss of preferential tax treatment among US employers who offer the qualified plans would be used to make a $600 per person government contribution into the plans. In addition, the GRA's would require a mandatory 5% contribution (tax) by all US workers.

Democratic Congressman Jim McDermott (D-WA) who supports the plan was quoted as saying, "the savings rate isn't going up for the investment of $80 billion [in 401(k) tax breaks], we have to start to think about whether or not we want to continue to invest that $80 billion for a policy that's not generating what we now say it should."

This legislation being considered by Democrats is perhaps the most dangerous proposal put forth by the Democrats to date. The system would essentially create a second Social Security System in which bureaucrats would control the funding, investment and use of the money. The government would control all provisions of the plan, and individual rights for determination of risk reward would be stripped.

Like the current Social Security System, which is failing and is expected to collapse unless massive reforms are instituted, the 401(k) replacement program would give no assurance of the protection of funds. The government, just as with Social Security, could essentially strip the plan of assets and use those assets within the general fund. Where is Al Gore and his lock box?

More importantly, consider the immediate implications of such a plan? There is currently $4.5 Trillion dollars invested within 401(k) plans in the United States, the transfer of this wealth to the government would destroy not only the financial markets but would also cause the collapse of an entire industry of financial and accounting companies that have been built upon the Retirement Savings Industry. This would be the largest loss of wealth and seizure of public assets in world history.

In addition, consider the long term ramifications of such a system. A 3% savings rate will essentially double the account value every 24 years. That would mean that if you were 41 years old today and had $20,000 in your 401 (k) plan, that money would now be worth $40,000 at age 65 under the GRA. This GRA plan would depress savings rate to a point that multiple generations of Americans would be unable to outpace inflation within their savings and suffer inadequate incomes upon retirement. The resulting "Welfare" generation would only spurn more government taxes in order to provide for their retirement. The resulting vicious cycle of impoverishment and taxation would never end.

Is this the change that we are looking for?

The seizure of $4.5 trillion dollars by the government. A promise of low returns, no control over assets, and no guarantee that the funds would not be replaced by a promissory note.

Is this the change that you want?

The creation of a welfare state in which the government is responsible for all aspects of our lives as if we were a society of 4 year olds.

Is this change for the better?

A government that will fail to protect the current Social Security & Medicare System but will create new Bureaucratic programs based upon those failing systems.

Is It Really Time To Change America?

Are we now in the age in which we abandon 232 years of government built upon State's Rights, Individual Rights, Checks & Balances, and an American Exceptionalism based upon unhindered opportunity and a government ruled by the people, not established to rule the people.

David Johnson, the CEO of Strategic Vision, shared the messages with National Review Online.

A poll that gave Sarah Palin and Barack Obama the same favorability rating is wrong off the bat. Be careful going outside tonight because you might not see tomorrow.

A third message stated:

Why would your presidential election poll results be so drastically different from every other reputable poll taken over the same time period? Are they that dumb or are you guys that smart? Smart guys wind up dead.

The company has contacted the FBI and appropriate authorities, Johnson said. There was, thankfully, nothing in the messages that indicated that the sender had actually sought out the location of the company or its employees. Johnson noted that while the messages came from different addresses, they all came within a short period of time, and that it was possible they were from the same person.

Johnson said he’s not fearful, but taking appropriate measures.

“It’s probably just a bunch of nut cases, but this is first time we’ve ever experienced something like this,” Johnson said. “It’s highly, highly unusual. We get messages in the vein of 'your numbers are wrong, the other guy's numbers are right' all the time. But this has never happened before.”

Any alleged plan to "seize 401k plan money" will never get off the ground. Just about everybody supports 401k plans. Changes are required--automatic enrollment and prohibition of investing any of an employee's savings in the stock or bonds of his employer.

That's on top of Democrats taking in the approximate $4 trillion of existing 401K savings to add to the Federal slush fund.

And Left Wing Moties are are now afraid to make a peep of criticism. We're talking massive increases in overall taxation under an all Democrat legislative and executive branch, not any kind of decrease.

This is beyond pathetic. I have some very good advice for Mote Lefties. No political party is worth sacrificing your constitutional rights and duties, livelihood and standard of living for. Particularly one that is composed of the most unpopular, incompetent Congress in US history and the least experienced, farthest Left presidential candidate in history.

Until now, US voters have usually shown enough common sense to vote in their self interest. But now, many of them apparently insist on repeating the same mistakes of higher taxation that led to the Great Depression after the initial stock crash of 1929, of which we are experiencing the near equivalent now (thanks to Democrat Congressvermin who, btw, are not being called to task in any way for their criminal irresponsibility).

Judge rejects Montco lawyer's bid to have Obama removed from ballot

A federal judge in Philadelphia last night threw out a complaint by a Montgomery County lawyer who claimed that Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama was not qualified to be president and that his name should be removed from the Nov. 4 ballot.

Philip J. Berg alleged in a complaint filed in federal district court on Aug. 21 against Obama, the Democratic National Committee and the Federal Election Commission, that Obama was born in Mombasa, Kenya.

Berg claimed that the Democratic presidential standardbearer is not even an American citizen but a citizen of Indonesia and therefore ineligible to be president.

He alleged that if Obama was permitted to run for president and subsequently found to be ineligible, he and other voters would be disenfranchised.

U.S. District Judge R. Barclay Surrick had denied Berg's request for a temporary restraining order on Aug. 22 but had not ruled on the merits of the suit until yesterday.

Obama and the Democratic National Committee had asked Surrick to dismiss Berg's complaint in a court filing on Sept. 24.

They said that Berg's claims were "ridiculous" and "patently false," that Berg had "no standing" to challenge the qualifications of a candidate for president because he had not shown the requisite harm to himself.

Surrick agreed.

In a 34-page memorandum and opinion, the judge said Berg's allegations of harm were "too vague and too attenuated" to confer standing on him or any other voters.

Surrick ruled that Berg's attempts to use certain laws to gain standing to pursue his claim that Obama was not a natural-born citizen were "frivolous and not worthy of discussion."

There are many ways to lose a presidential election. John McCain is losing in a way that threatens to take the entire Republican Party down with him.

A year ago, the Arizona senator's team made a crucial strategic decision. McCain would run on his (impressive) personal biography. On policy, he'd hew mostly to conservative orthodoxy, with a few deviations -- most notably, his support for legalization for illegal immigrants. But this strategy wasn't yielding results in the general election. So in August, McCain tried a bold new gambit: He would reach out to independents and women with an exciting and unexpected vice presidential choice.


Run on personal biography... I believe that.

Hew to conservative orthodoxy... I think he did that, but that was mistake 1.

Palin... a reach out to independents and women? Are you kidding me? He was reaching to the base, and believed the Hillary/PUMA wave would carry him in.



But really... McCains strategy wasn't too awful. If it weren't for this economic mess I think it would be a very close race.

Nope... what killed the Republicans are the Republicans. In the past 10 years they have completely discarded the brand for religious-wingnuttery, war-mongering, and pandering to the super-wealthy. Independents like me are over that.

Does this mean the end of the Republican party? It depends on the Republican party and it depends on the Democratic party. The Democrats would be well-advised to stick pretty close to their mandate (economy, health care, war) over the next 4-8 years before they start pulling up their pet projects (gun control). It will take 8-12 years for a more-permanent capture of moderates-independents.

Otherwise in 4 years, if Obama does a bad job, or in 8 years if Obama does a good job... we're going to go through all of this again.

When it comes to economics, the environment, education, health care, minimalist gov't... they're flakes.

But as you say... if they could bend from their orthodoxy they would have a lot of peoples' ears.

I could see them going for something like the flat tax% (or modified flat tax so it isn't quite so regressive). They'd want to balance the budget, but I'm learning that isn't always the best thing...although I think the overspending lately isn't right either.

I dunno... The Dems have as much of an opportunity as the Libertarians... they just have to decide if they want to do things to keep the independents.

First, you categorize them as stooooopid. Sure they're likely educated at the same institutions that your Democratic couterparts are, but they cheated their way through college, because they're so stoooopid. And that makes them immoral. How Republicans dress or look is always scrutinized and assumed to be outlandish, over the top, out of style or ugly - no matter how trivial the element is. If a Republican has spider veins, they're disgusting. If a Republican uses moisturizer on their dry skin - that selection is subject for banter on MSNBC. In other words, any attempt by any Republican to look professional is criticized as too much or not enough. Women moreso then men face this type of criticism.

After they have been labeled as stupid and immoral, they're deemed to be divas or despots, supposedly above everyone else - acting purely in their own interests. So what they have support staff and managers - they must be labeled as the type that is purely self-serving.

When that starts to get old, the Dems then label them as sociopaths or psychopaths.

It doesn't stop there, though.

To recap - Republicans are stupid, immoral, physically ugly, out only for themselves and sociopathic.

Frank Wolf, the other day to ask him to make clear his position on health care (something Wolf has refused to do so far) and, rather than talk them, stood by as members of his own staff assaulted one staffer with a cane, while a couple of others backed the second staffer against a wall.

Temperatures always rise towards the end of the campaign season, but this year, the prospect of massive GOP losses looms large in the minds of Republicans, and they're obviously lashing out in a lot of ways. Ugly rhetoric is one. This is another.

Mark Foley's inappropriate behavior toward a House page. At that point in 2006, Republicans had already been buffeted for a year or more by a then-worsening situation in Iraq and a wide array of scandals. Just as it seemed things could not possibly get worse, they did. In a new state Field Poll, the presidential ticket of Obama and Delaware Sen. Joe Biden leads Republican John McCain and running mate Sarah Palin by 55 percent to 33 percent.

If the margin stands on Nov. 4, Obama will rack up a California landslide more lopsided than that of Democrat Lyndon Johnson in 1964 or Republican Ronald Reagan in 1980 and 1984.

For her part, Sarah Palin, who has lately taken to calling Obama “Barack the Wealth Spreader,” seems to be something of a suspect character herself. She is, at the very least, a fellow-traveller of what might be called socialism with an Alaskan face. The state that she governs has no income or sales tax. Instead, it imposes huge levies on the oil companies that lease its oil fields. The proceeds finance the government’s activities and enable it to issue a four-figure annual check to every man, woman, and child in the state. One of the reasons Palin has been a popular governor is that she added an extra twelve hundred dollars to this year’s check, bringing the per-person total to $3,269. A few weeks before she was nominated for Vice-President, she told a visiting journalist—Philip Gourevitch, of this magazine—that “we’re set up, unlike other states in the union, where it’s collectively Alaskans own the resources. So we share in the wealth when the development of these resources occurs.” Perhaps there is some meaningful distinction between spreading the wealth and sharing it (“collectively,” no less), but finding it would require the analytic skills of Karl the Marxist.

I found it interesting that Jon Stewart said he probably would've voted for McCain over Gore in 2000.

I point out to some people that Gore (and Kerry for that matter) weren't good candidates, and they get really bent out of shape about it. Probably because both were such close calls. It was arguable that Gore had the election stolen, but he also did some things that alienated himself from states that he could've won the whole shebang in spite of FL, like Tennessee.

Kerry just has anti-charisma.

I hate Bush like a white-hot sun, but Gore/Kerry were not good candidates (even if they may have been good presidents).

Anyway... I was surprised about what Stewart said because it means he and I are closer on politics than I would've thought.

So some young kid (he looked to be about 18 at best) came to my door last night wanting me to talk about what they're trying to do to get this candidate elected. I was very upset to learn that they are trying to get him listed on the ballot twice as running from 2 different parties. I was naive and astounded to learn that that was legal in our state! That is so blatantly unfair. All one need do is go to the local grocery and see how much competition there is over shelf space to know that space is a critical factor. Just imagine people who are trying to register a protest vote and vote for a 3rd party candidate only to find out that the candidate they selected is really one and the same as the major party candidate. That's just wrong. What if a candidate manages to get himself listed 10 times under 10 different parties making it difficult to find the alternate or increase errors in selecting the wrong candidate. That's just wrong. Perhaps when I retire I can work to fix it.

So I refused to hear what he had to say. He stank of cigarettes and I asked him if he smoked. He said he just had a cigarette. So I told him about my father, my mother and my SIL and I told him the election wasn't half so important as saving his life. To focus on quitting rather than this as his ability to campaign will be greatly affected by his premature death.

WaPo-ABC Tracking: Race, Ethnicity and Turnout: The Black Tide

Barack Obama continues to hold the lead in the Washington Post-ABC News daily tracking poll, topping John McCain by a 53 to 44 percent margin among likely voters.

Obama currently outpaces recent Democratic nominees among white voters, but his advantage among nonwhite voters is even more dramatic. Overall, nonwhites go for Obama over McCain 80 to 16 percent, with African Americans and Hispanics in particular providing a big boost to the Democrat.

African Americans express near unanimous support for Obama, 97 percent to 1 percent in the latest tracking poll, and only about 4 percent remain even "movable," lower than the 8 percent of all likely voters who said they could still be swayed over the final weekend.

Latino voters also break for Obama by a wide, 68 to 29 percent margin. As among African Americans, nearly all Latinos have made up their minds for sure, with 5 percent saying there's even a chance they could move.

The Associated Press found that Obama's aunt had been instructed to leave the country four years ago by an immigration judge who rejected her request for asylum from her native Kenya. The woman, Zeituni Onyango (zay-TUHN on-YANG-oh), is living in public housing in Boston and is the half-sister of Obama's late father.

A statement given to the AP by Obama's campaign said, "Senator Obama has no knowledge of her status but obviously believes that any and all appropriate laws be followed."

Interesting anecdote and probably a testament to ground organization. I have no idea what this means. Friday night (which happens to be the start of our Sabbath) my wife answered the phone to hear a man stating he was from the McCain-Palin campaign. He asked who she was supporting. She replied that we will vote for Obama. He replied with "but he's a f-----g n---er!". Before I get to my wife's response I'll first have to say that I understand desperation and I also understand that this pitch may actually work for a few people. I also understand that there are people who are whack-jobs phone-banking for both sides. But here are some facts:

My wife and I are Black. Citing the fact that Obama is a f----g n---er as a way to sway our vote may not be a great idea. My wife and I live in Maryland... Baltimore, MD.... One of the most African American areas of Baltimore Maryland. How on earth did our phone numbers get on to a McCain volunteers phone bank list of potential voters to be calling at this stage in the game? We have never received a call from the Obama campaign.

Just weird. Not sure what to make of it... but that's not a good sign of organization. If it did anything it made us want to donate more. BTW, the rest of the call went downhill from there. My wife prayed for forgiveness after the call.

McCain's choice of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate doesn't appear to be wearing well with most Americans. In the poll, 45% of registered voters rated the choice as "poor" and another 18% said it was "only fair," while 19% called it "pretty good" and 16% excellent.

Those are much more negative ratings than in a USA TODAY survey taken just after the Republican National Convention in St. Paul. Then, 60% called the pick of Palin excellent or good; 38% said it was "only fair" or poor.

In contrast, assessments of Barack Obama's choice of Delaware Sen. Joe Biden remain positive. Now, 60% call Obama's choice excellent or "pretty good," while 38% say it was "only fair" or poor. In early September, the divide was 63%-33%.

Biden has a favorable-unfavorable rating of 53%-32%. Palin has a favorable-unfavorable rating of 42%-49%.

One more historic tidbit from the survey: Obama's favorable rating is 62% -- the highest that any presidential candidate has registered in Gallup's final pre-election polls going back to 1992.

Well lets put it this way. If in light of the polls, mccain gets in, then there will have to be a very serious examination of the election process.

My mother is in FL and tried voting once already...she was in a very long line that wrapped around the building and then was told that "Tallahassee computers are down" and there was no way of knowing when voting would start up again. Seeing as the rain began, she went home and plans on going back tomorrow, hoping that by then, so many would've voted that the lines will be very short.

Now I want to know what computers in Tallahassee have to do with voting in Boynton Beach. Do they not have local servers to store the data on? Do they not have a paper back up so people can vote locally and the data be sent to Tallahassee at a later interval?

Not to mention just thinking about all this, the number of potential errors in the system, even without malicious intent, is incredible. Add a little disingenuousness and the voting process is totally suspect.

At least where we vote we have a paper ballot that is preserved so if computers fail or the race is close, a hand recount is possible. That ought to be a requirement of EVERY voting system in the country.

They tested the computers here in SF a couple of years ago. I tried one and it broke down in the middle of my voting.

I don't know what is wrong with the scanner system they seem to have settled on. It is hard to make a mistake on the paper ballot..use a black marker to connect lines....the scan provides the electronic speed and there's a paper record.

There's big news on the Mike Connell case today--although the press, as usual, has not reported it, as ACORN still looms large for them. Thus they have continued to ignore a major story re: McPalin's plan to steal next week's election, as Connell is on the McCain team's payroll, just as he was on Bush/Cheney's payroll in 2000 and 2004. (Now as ever, Karl's in charge.)

First, there's movement on the legal front. As Connell has refused to honor the subpoena calling him to be deposed, the lawyers have filed papers to compel compliance. As reported earlier, Connell has a trio of high-power GOP attorneys working hard to block his deposition until "after the election." His resistance should be major news, of course--and so should this attempt to force him into court.

But even more important is the affidavit filed today by Stephen Spoonamore, the expert witness in this case. In it he lays out how Rove/Connell rigged the contest in Ohio, using the "man in the middle" set-up well-known to computer fraudsters of all kinds.

The flow chart shows how voting information was transferred from Ohio to SmarTech Inc., a Chattanooga Tennessee IT company known for its close association with the Republican Party, before the 2004 election results were displayed online.

Late last week, the lawyers filed a motion to compel compliance, and to everyone’s surprise and delight, the judge ordered Connell to appear today and to be deposed for two hours about his role in this longstanding electronic plot, basically, to flip votes towards the Republicans.

Some of this deposition will be sealed, and I have to tell you the part that’ll be sealed. Apparently, Rove has threatened Connell. He told him that if Connell did not take the fall for this whole thing, the Department of Justice would start investigating Connell’s wife Heather for improper lobbying practices. voting in my town this am was quick and easy. it's clear they added more capacity for handling the higher turnout. hubby went later this am and said it was busy but no real waiting. election lady said she wished the turnout was so high for all the elections.

my biggest concern were the two people standing side by side the requisite 75' away from the voting place, each holding a sign for competing local reps and carrying on a rather loud conversation! Had the potential for getting ugly.

My 11-year-old son and I strolled down to the local high school to vote at 10:00 am. The line was a little longer than usual. Got in and out in about 15 minutes. McCain signs were more prevalent, which speaks more to the enthusiasm of the local precinct captain than to reality (Obama should win our part of Maryland by at least 3-1).

Mike Connell dummied up at his deposition yesterday, saying repeatedly that he knew nuttin' about nuttin'. Well-guarded by a unit of Republican attorneys, Rove's longtime IT fixer professed no knowledge of attempts to rig the vote in the Ohio contest four years back, or of any "Trojan horses"--leftover bits of code that might be used to slant the outcome of the race tonight.

Connell's GOP attorneys jumped in frequently to tell their client to shut up. For example, they did not let Connell answer this question: "Who directed you to set up the 'Swift Boat Veterans for Truth' IT network?"

As tight-lipped as he was, however, Connell did let slip one detail of immense significance. Asked if he'd brought SmartTech and Triad, two private IT companies owned by fierce partisans (and dedicated Christianists), into the Ohio election game,
Connell admitted that he did. (At first he denied bringing SmartTech in, but then
admitted it.)

This was a major revelation, as it confirms the view--long advanced by expert witness Stephen Spoonamore--that SmartTech and Triad played key roles in stealing the 2004 election. (SmartTech ran Ohio's election results through its GOP-supported servers in Chattanooga, then sent it back to SoS Blackwell's website: a classic "man in the middle" set-up favored by computer fraudsters, according to Spoonamore. Triad interfered with the recount by pulling hard drives from county-level tabulators.)

Otherwise, Connell sang a song of perfect innocence, denying that there were "any
problems" with the voting systems in Ohio--and, furthermore, that he "does not know of any vulnerablities" in any voting systems anywhere! In short, his message was that everything is fine, there's been no fraud in past election, and there won't be
any fraud today. So everyone should just forget the whole thing, and go home.

The deposition yesterday served two important purposes. First of all, it adds some extra punch to the big racketeering case that the attorneys have been building against Bush & Co. for months.

And, just as important, Mike Connell and his team are now on notice that they're working under very careful scrutiny. So they might now be less inclined to risk another electronic theft of an American election.

The removal of two Republican election workers from a Warren Township polling site - for using improper methods to challenge voters' rights to cast a ballot - has prompted local Republican Party leaders to issue a statement of regret.

The two officials - an official challenger and a clerk - were removed by unanimous vote of the Marion County Election Board.

The officials were reportedly challenging voters with information obtained through party affiliation reports, which is not one of the accepted challenges such as a person's address, age or lack of ID.

"We were disappointed to hear of the incident regarding these two workers. The Marion County Republican Party was not aware of these alleged activities, nor did the Party instruct any worker to engage in such behavior," Marion County Republican Party Chairman Tom John said in a statement issued at 2 p.m.

As of 2:45pm, Election Protection has received over 48,000 calls to the 1-866-OUR-VOTE Hotline since the phones opened at 5:30am this morning.

FLORIDA: We have received more than 30 calls from voters all across the state concerned that their precinct's optical scan machine is not working. When this occurs, ballots are supposed to be placed in a “a secure bin" under the voting machine. Because of the volume of ballots, these bins are now filling up. We have received several reports of poll workers collecting ballots in a bag, which is not in accordance with the law. Election Protection is working with local election officials to ensure that all votes that have yet to be counted due to optical scan malfunctions are placed in secure locations.

MICHIGAN: As of 11:45 a.m. EST, voters on Detroit’s east side were waiting five hours to vote in 1,000-person long line at Beth Eden Baptist, largely as a result of an understaffed polling operation. An Election Protection partner law firm on the ground in Detroit is investigating the situation.

OHIO: Voters in several Ohio counties reported to Election Protection problems at their polling location due to poll workers not accepting proper identification and forcing the voters to cast provisional ballots.

VIRGINIA: Many machine issues from early this morning have been resolved but we continue to see major residual effects in the Chesapeake area where some voters are waiting in five to six hour lines.

Democrats are cheered by early numbers showing that Obama holds a healthy lead in Vigo County, a place that one Dem described to us as "the most reliable bellwether county in the country."

"Vigo has only been wrong on president twice since 1892," this Dem enthuses.

A story in the Indy Star concurs, adding that of the most reliable bellwhether counties in the country, Vego "has voted closest to the national margin."

Right now, in Vigo County, Obama is up 57%-42%, with 80% reporting.

I'm just delighted obama has won. Not only because it will put an end to the failed goper policies (and give the dems a shot at their failed policies) and will help restore our supreme court to a more centralized balance but because it restores my faith in the voting system. Diebold, at least this time around, is NOT running the election.

As i was catching clips of obama's acceptance speech it just warmed the cockles of my heart to hear someone who's going to be president who, as maureen dowd described it so many years ago, if the wind blows his papers away, he'll be able to finish the speech anyway!

Let's hear it for the victory of the intellectual elite!

My big concern is that the gopers will view this loss as a result of a failure by w instead of the larger failure of their policies.

crony capitalism, neoconism, anti-intellectualism, antinomianism, authoritarianism, and the fundamental belief that government can't be a force for good but can be a force for personal gain, are all examples of their policy failures. W was simply the culmination of what they've been pushing for the last several decades.

You can chalk up the big failures to their policies: katrina, iraq war, 9/11, financial crisis. And you can chalk up their failure to enact key policies as the saving grace of the past 8 years esp not privatizing social security!

That's what they should focus on. Their grasp of the middle has not crystallized, and won't for 8-12 years. So if they get distracted (like the Republicans did, or like the Democrats did 1992-1994) the pendulum will swing back fast and hard. This election has many facets. It was a referendum on Bush, I think a lot of people like me see Obama for his gifts, it was a denouncement of Palin, and the Economy took a turn at the last minute that helped Obama immensely (electoral-vote.com's graphs show that it was shaping up like the last month of the Kerry election right before the bailout).

So yes. I hope the Democrats don't screw it up by trying to go too far too fast and before they've consolidated this mandate.

I think you go too far saying it is a "denouncement of Palin." Her lack of international experience differs little from Obamas, to be fair, and she has more time in an executive seat than he. Now, she is not ready to be a VP, but then again, Obama isn't ready to be president and that didn't stop the electorate.

Bush + economy + someone who can speak in full sentences = victory.

Obama seems ready to press this advantage. The best early clue of his ambitions: He wants sharp-elbowed Democratic Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-Ill.) to run his White House.

Democrats are positioned to do more than move legislation. They will flush Republicans out of key positions in the federal government and lobbying firms. They will install their people in the federal courts. They will be positioned to raise money for those who usually give to Republicans and easily recruit the most desirable candidates in 2010, as other Democrats look to join what looks like a winning team.

the way the dems can/will screw this up is by losing focus on what's best for the nation as a whole and being as corrupt as the gopers in listening to the lobbyists and special interests over what's best and right for the country.

Why don't they start with restoring some of our lost civil liberties? Why don't they start with fixing, say, the bankruptcy law so it isn't easier for a person to keep a 2nd vacation home than it is for a homeowner to keep his owner-occupied home? How about some sound fiscal stimulus aimed at the unemployed and some infrastructure spending?

Time will tell.

In the past, Democrats tolerated Lieberman's political straddling because he held their slim political majority in his hands. Now that Democrats have strengthened their hold on the Senate, there could be added pressure to punish Lieberman.

I've gotten a few e-mails from Barack Obama and Joe Biden supporters about my plans for my future in politics. I can take a few mouments to share that right now. After high school, I plan to move to Milwaukee, Wisconsin to attend college to get my Political Science Degree. I will then move back to my hometown to announce my candidacy for political office.

Amy Walter of the Cook Report was on the Newshour tonight with a unique post-mortem. The punditocracy has focused on Obama's response to the financial collapse as the factor that cemented his position as a leader people could trust, his "3 am call"

Walter demurs. Cook was running some internal polling throughout the cycle and Walter says that it was Obama's victory over Clinton that assured the public. Indeed against those of us who thought that the primary process hurt Obama, Walter sees it as a major factor in his win

The monster years

Last night wasn't just a victory for tolerance; it wasn't just a mandate for progressive change; it was also, I hope, the end of the monster years.

What I mean by that is that for the past 14 years America's political life has been largely dominated by, well, monsters. Monsters like Tom DeLay, who suggested that the shootings at Columbine happened because schools teach students the theory of evolution. Monsters like Karl Rove, who declared that liberals wanted to offer therapy and understanding” to terrorists. Monsters like Dick Cheney, who saw 9/11 as an opportunity to start torturing people.

And in our national discourse, we pretended that these monsters were reasonable, respectable people. To point out that the monsters were, in fact, monsters, was shrill.

Four years ago it seemed as if the monsters would dominate American politics for a long time to come. But for now, at least, they've been banished to the wilderness.

Carl Cameron does one of those Now-it-can-be-told stories Fox likes to do. In this episode we learn that:

Palin did NOT know Africa was a continent.
She did NOT know who the parties to NAFTA were. [Hint: U.S., Canada, Mexico]
She threw dramatic temper tantrums over bad press.
She refused to prepare for the Gibson or Couric interviews.

None of this really came out during the Presidential campaign because of course it was told "off the record". There are a few ways to look at this, the most interesting being is why they felt the need to spill the beans the day after the election. Are the knives really out on Sarah Palin? Sure seems so. Time will tell.

Wiz - I assume Jesse is weeping in joy, overwhelm, and grief. Joy at seeing an African-American chosen by the American people to lead them. Overwhelm at the culminating moment of so much of his life's work. Grief at all those he has worked with who are not with him to experience this moment. When I first saw the image of Jesse standing in the crowd weeping I got chills all over. Interestingly, I continue to get those chills everytime I remember that image.

Interesting! It's obviously an overwhelming moment for him and I sense all of those emotions too-so I guess the answer is both joy and regret.

I also can't help but wonder if the flaws of the ego, so evident in guys like Jackson, Clinton, and Edwards, will overpower Obama. I hope not--for everyone's sake.
