Apparently, God wants Barack Obama to be President.

On July 30, Stuart Shepard of Focus on the Family posted a video on their website prompting Christians all over America to pray for rain to disrupt Senator Obama's acceptance speech tonight at Invesco Field.

In the video, Shepard called for Christians to pray for "abundant, torrential" rains during the Democratic nominee's acceptance speech in order to disrupt it. He had asked Christians to pray for rain that would create flash flood warnings and "swamp the intersections." In the video, Shepard said he hoped the rain would start "two minutes before the acceptance speech begins."

Naturally, this prompted thousands of people, many of them members of Focus on the Family, to request they pull this ad from their website, which they finally did on August 12. However, this was reported widely, both at the national and local level, and hundreds, possibly thousands of Christians were ardently praying for "abundant rain, torrential rain. Urban and small stream flood advisory rain" to ruin Obama's acceptance speech.

Well, God heard these prayers as He hears all prayers, and instead of a rain of biblical proportions, He decided that today would be the best day possible, with mild temperatures and the only cloudless sky in the week.

So apparently, God has spoken, and He's endorsed Obama.

Through sheer hard work, Carol learned to walk again. But when John McCain came home from Vietnam, she had gained a lot of weight and bore little resemblance to her old self.

Today, she stands at just 5ft4in and still walks awkwardly, with a pronounced limp. Her body is held together by screws and metal plates and, at 70, her face is worn by wrinkles that speak of decades of silent suffering....

McCain divorced her in 1980 and married Cindy, 18 years his junior and the heir to an Arizona brewing fortune, just one month later....

Obama Getting Convention Bounce In Gallup -- And It May Just Be Beginning

Barack Obama might just might be getting a convention bounce, if today's Gallup tracking poll is to be believed.

The new numbers: Obama 48%, McCain 42%, outside the ±2% margin of error. Just two days ago, Gallup had McCain up 46%-44%.

The pollster's analysis points out there is a lag in polling as we wait for the bounce -- a given day's poll release doesn't include sampling that might reflect any reaction to speeches from the night before, so it took us until today just to see any impact from Hillary's Clinton's speech on Tuesday.

As such, we haven't yet seen the impact of Bill Clinton speech last night, and we'll need to wait for Saturday to see the impact from Obama's tonight -- and we're already seeing a bounce in Gallup..

Ben Craw and I just arrived at Invesco Field in Denver, site of tonight's acceptance speech by Barack Obama. We were lucky enough to have grabbed the last couple of seats available in the press box.

An hour before the day's official convention schedule kicks off -- and six hours before Obama is scheduled to speak -- a scattering of people are already in their seats above the field. Delegates are filing in. They are seated on the field itself. It's a bright, sunny, not-too-warm day here, but that's a long time to be baking in the sun.

I hate to even comment on the set prepared for Obama for his speech. The ridiculous right wing meme that the set is a Greek temple to Obama is too mindless to deserve comment. The set looks like nothing so much as the East Colonnade of the White House.

The demand for press access to this event is so great that we're apprehensive about losing our seats here in the press box. We have seats available in the stadium itself as well as some access to the field itself.

We'll be bringing you reports as we are able, including video as the day unfolds.

On the precise anniversary of MLK's most thrilling and profound oration, to be asked (by a wildly attractive candidate who seeks to replace a corps of corrupt goons) to finally reckon with King's most basic demand-slash-prophesy - to judge a man by his character and not the colour of his skin. To see that America has indeed moved. This is amazing, hair-raising.

It is - now we can see it - of more significance than this mere electoral cycle.

Obama can still win, and he might even wind up winning big. But this particular chessgame has been won by the Republicans. Obamas pick is tired, and will weigh him down more than he will add (unless we see some new tricks from the old dog, which I doubt). Palin, by contrast, gives McCain a huge boost, and if she manages to win over enough women might deliver him the election.

It's a charming duo, think of it, McCain the old Navy dog in snappy banter with a smart, stunning young woman with history on her side at his own side.

Now think of the tense, slightly uncomfortable pairing of that rare phenom from the future, Obama, with the hard-boiled old Democratic pol. No magic there, folks. Obama will be carrying Biden, and phenom with broad shoulders and all it didn't have to be this way.

.... surprise choice of Sarah Palin is a gamble that picking a solid conservative and non-Washington insider with a bit of a reformist record will outweigh the clear downside: That choosing someone with only two years in high office as back-up president undermines attacks on Obama's alleged lack of commander-in-chief readiness.

By any reasonable measure, Palin's resume should render it all but impossible to argue that Obama is too inexperienced for the gig of leader of the free world.

Palin has been in higher office as Governor of Alaska for exactly half the time Obama has been in the Senate. Before that, she served only two full terms in the City Council, from 1992 to 1996, before running for mayor of Wasilla.

To put this in perspective, Wasilla had a population of only 7,738 people as of 2004. By contrast, as TPM's Eric Kleefeld calculates, Obama's State Senate district had roughly 210,000 people -- about 27 times the number Palin repped in lower office.

Nor has Palin been tested in the grueling arena of national politics. She'll be forced to face off in a debate against Joe Biden, who's been in the Senate nearly 20 times as long as Palin has held higher office; Biden is well known to diplomats in world capitals.

On the plus side for McCain, Palin brings some much-needed "estrogen to the ticket," as one Obama hand remarked to us.

She's the sweetheart of Alaska: Attractive, young (44), a hockey mom, feminine and strong (beautiful and a member of the NRA!). Palin could appeal to a generation of women who respect strength and independence in women, but don't necessarily identify with the feminist movement. She has also managed to achieve higher office while coming across as someone who puts family before career.

There's a powerful maternal narrative, too: In April, she elected not to have an abortion when she discovered that her baby had Down's Syndrome. And for good measure, she also has a son in the army named "Track" who's set to deploy to Iraq.....

DENVER—An issue for Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin that is already drawing attention in the opening moments of her debut as the Republican vice presidential pick is an ongoing state ethics probe that was launched just a few weeks ago.

An independent investigator appointed by a panel of state legislators earlier this month is looking into whether Mrs. Palin dismissed a top law enforcement official in her administration because he failed to fire a state trooper, Mike Wooten, who went through a messy divorce with Mrs. Palin's sister.

The investigation follows on the heels of Mrs. Palin's abrupt decision in mid-July to dismiss Walt Monegan, her Public Safety Commissioner. Mrs. Palin said she wanted to take the department in a different direction, but questions emerged after Mr. Monegan said he felt pressured to fire Mr. Wooten.

Mr. Monegan said members of Mrs. Palin's administration, as well Mrs. Palin's husband, Todd, and the governor herself talk to him about Mr. Wooten.

Mr. Monegan told the Anchorage Daily News that Mr. Palin showed him some of the findings of a private investigator the family had hired and accused him of variety of misdeeds, including drunk driving and child abuse.

Mr. Palin told the newspaper he feared for his wife's safety and said that Mr. Wooten had made threats against her and her family.

As part of efforts to demonstrate she welcomed the inquiry, Mrs. Palin asked the state's attorney general to look into the allegations as well.

Earlier this month, she released an audio recording of a top aide pressing a police lieutenant about why no action had been taken against Mr. Wooten, given the allegations against him. She also disclosed there had been more two dozen inquiries from members of her staff to the public safety department about him, but she said she only knew about some of the inquiries and had played no role in them.

Excerpts of the audio recording Mrs. Palin released showed Frank Bailey, the state's director of boards and commissions, pushing Lt. Rodney Dial in February about Mr. Wooten.

"Todd and Sarah are scratching their heads, 'Why on earth hasn't this, why is this guy still representing the department?' He's a horrible recruiting tool, you know," Mr. Bailey told the lieutenant.

McSame Goes Moose Hunting Without a License

At TPMMuckraker we've been on the Palin/Trooper-gate story for a while. And we've just reported that the investigation by the state legislature is scheduled to report its findings in the first couple days of November.

This is a perilous story for Palin and McCain. I flagged some of the details earlier in the day. But this is the kind of story, the kind of investigation, where it is highly unlikely that Palin hasn't made public false statements about her involvement in what happened. I think that's generous. As always in cases like this, the question is whether anyone can prove it. There are a couple investigations -- one under the auspices of the state legislature and another of the state Attorney General, which she either supported or 'requested'. That latter investigation already surfaced taped phone calls that forced Palin walk back her original denials and admit that her aides had pressed for the firings, just without her knowledge.

Using the power of the government to settle scores with estranged relatives or associates is far from unprecedented. There are probably several similar investigations going on in other states as we speak. But I doubt very much that they were prepared for the heat of full bore national media scrutiny on this one. And in this case you not only the underlying act, which is sleazy, but the high probability that Palin is lying about her role.


Late Update: And special bonus: after the firing that got her administration into trouble, Palin replaced him with another guy who'd recently been hit with a credible sexual harassment accusation. Palin later admitted that she knew about the complaint in advance but denied that she knew of the letter of reprimand he'd received.

He lasted two weeks on the job.

“Not again!” I thought to myself this morning, as news trickled out that John McCain was set to pick Alaska governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. Not again, because too often women are promoted for the wrong reasons, and then blamed when things don’t go right.

Don’t get me wrong: what I know of Palin (which admittedly isn’t much), I kind of like. I don’t agree with her politics. But in her two years in Alaska’s state house, she’s shown herself to be a scrappy reformer, a no-nonsense manager, and a consistent conservative. She’s also a mother of five, which in my book is a sterling test of leadership.

Since there are only eight women among our nation’s fifty governor’s, and only three of them are Republicans, she was certainly someone to watch, a potential comer on the national stage. At 44, she’s young, a fresh face, and wildly popular in Alaska. And it was easy to see her appeal during today’s Ohio rally, where McCain introduced her as his running mate. She showed herself to be an utterly down-to-earth hockey mom with an independent (one might say maverick) streak. And her shout-outs to Geraldine Ferraro and Hillary Clinton for their path-breaking campaigns added a genuine note of grace.

But is she ready to be commander-in-chief?

Unlike Barack Obama, whom McCain has so emphatically condemned as not-ready, Palin hasn’t run for or served in the Senate. Nor has she run for president, which would have required her to think through and take positions on critical issues from the war in Iraq to the war on terror, from Iran’s nuclear ambitions to the Russian incursion into Georgia, from the emerging power of China to the march of globalization. She hasn’t debated tough opponents a dozen or so times or faced aggressive, often downright hostile reporters on a daily basis. Talk about untested. Her slim record undermines one of McCain’s most effective arguments against Obama.

Clearly, McCain thinks Palin will help him among women, particularly those disaffected Hillary Clinton supporters who are having so much trouble “getting over it.” It just shows how clueless the McCain camp actually is. Unlike Clinton and Ferraro, Palin hasn’t been a strong national voice on women’s issues. She hasn’t been at the barricades, fighting for women’s health, equal pay, economic security. And she certainly hasn’t had anything to say about the national-security issues that are also important to women across the political spectrum. Does the McCain camp really expect pro-choice Democratic and independent women to be swayed by a sleight-of-gender?

McCain made the decision to double down on his credentials as a take-no-prisoners reformer. But he did so at the expense of the more important qualifications for a running mate.

It’s not political to say that John McCain turns 72 today. That he’s a cancer survivor. That he spent six years being tortured and abused in a Vietnamese prison camp. Those are the physical realities of his life, and pure and simple, they demanded that he chose a running mate who is ready, really ready. That he put country first. Today, he failed that test.

Worse, when Sarah Palin falls short—and I hope I’m wrong but I think in important ways, such as her debate with Joe Biden, she will—some people will conclude that women can’t cut it. That’s unfair to Sarah Palin—and it’s certainly unfair to the rest of us.

But she has her own ethics concern, an investigation of whether the governor’s office was involved in firing a state trooper who was in the midst of a nasty divorce from Palin’s sister — Troopergate with a bit of Alaska Gothic thrown in. And McCain’s selection -– a woman who looks young enough to be his college-age daughter -– makes it hard for Republicans to criticize Barack Obama for his inexperience. Palin is an inoculation for what may be the biggest rap against Obama. That’s a huge risk.

Could Palin take on Putin?

Slaying Frank Murkowski and dueling with Don Young, the pork-loving congressman behind the bridge, is one thing. Both men are old-style hacks, to be kind. But Palin has zero experience on the world stage -– a crucial factor for McCain, who made the announcement on his 72nd birthday. And, just recently, she seemed to have no idea what the job of vice president entails.

“What is it exactly that the vice president does every day?” she asked in an interview on CNBC. A fair question, but one that also reinforces her inexperience.

Her bio is classic Alaska, a state where everyone has a past but it’s so far, far away – “Outside,” as Alaskans call the mainland United States. If Hawaii is “foreign and exotic” to some geographically challenged pundits, what will they think of Alaska, which has its own time zone?

But even the Times cannot spin Palin backwards, because almost every detail of her bio is likely to resound very, very well with the exact crowd who is doubtful about Obama "sharing their values" or "being a reg'lar guy", those moronic non-reasons to vote for someone which are nevertheless fetishized in Yankistan.

Palin eloped with her husband, Todd, a commercial fisherman, who later won the 2,000-mile Iron Dog snow machine (as snowmobiles are called in Alaska) race. She gave each of her five children names that sound like her state -– Track, Bristol, Willow, Piper and Trig. She’s a self-described “hockey mom,” which means something in Minnesota and Colorado, two battleground states.

As a University of Idaho graduate, a television sports reporter, a beauty queen who was Miss Wasilla and competed for Miss Alaska, Palin brings a bit of the “Legally Blonde” aspect to the race -– you underestimate her at your peril, as opponents found in Alaska, and in the movie.

Militantly anti-choice and evangelical, the 44-year-old gave birth to her last child five months ago. (There were complications — the child has Down Syndrome — a point that she brings up in explaining her convictions.)

Hard to argue unless being a "hottie" is the sole criterion

There was a TV ad for deodorant that said, "Never let them see you sweat." The John McCain campaign has just showed the world that it is drenched.

Selecting Sarah Palin as its choice for a vice presidential candidate is perhaps the worst such choice in American History. To be fair, maybe there are worse choices, but I don't know how bad William O. Butler was when he ran with Lewis Cass against Zachary Taylor.

But it's far worse than Dan Quayle, who was a sitting senator. Worse even than Geraldine Ferraro, who at least served in Congress for three-terms. And far worse than William Miller, a choice so obscure when selected by Barry Goldwater that he (honestly) later did an American Express commercial asking, "Do you know me?" And that ad was after the election. But even Miller had been a Congressman for 12 years. And been a prosecutor during the Nuremberg War trials against Nazis. Sarah Palin lists her credits as a hockey mom.

The latest good luck for the Democrats is that the McCain campaign was just as bamboozled as the press by the false Hillary narrative. McCain was obviously itching to choose his pal Joe Lieberman as his running mate. A onetime Democrat who breaks with the G.O.P. by supporting abortion rights might have rebooted his lost maverick cred more forcefully than Palin, who is cracking this particular glass ceiling nearly a quarter-century after the Democrats got there first. Lieberman might have even been of some use in roiling the Obama-Hillary-Bill juggernaut that will now storm through South Florida.

The main reason McCain knuckled under to the religious right by picking Palin is that he actually believes there’s a large army of embittered Hillary loyalists who will vote for a hard-line conservative simply because she’s a woman. That’s what happens when you listen to the TV news echo chamber. Not only is the whole premise ludicrous, but it is every bit as sexist as the crude joke McCain notoriously told about Janet Reno, Hillary and Chelsea Clinton.

She seems to be up to her eyeballs in small town scandals, family secrets and flip flops on the issues. It would be nice if the candidate's kids were left out of it but that's not the way it is. Just to put all these claims about Sarah Palin's experience as Mayor of Wasilla into perspective, it turns out that in 1996 she won the mayoralty by 200 votes -- and given the size of Wasilla, it turns out that this constituted a landslide victory.

From the Anchorage Daily News in 1996, just after the election (via Nexis)...

Palin's victory was seen as a major upset. Stein has been mayor since 1987 and was seeking his fourth term. He lost by more than 200 votes, with a final tally of 616-413.

A "major upset" of 616-413. That would actually be kind of cute, if her experience as mayor of Wasilla wasn't genuinely being touted by GOPers as one sign of her preparedness to be back-up commander-in-chief.

Relatedly, today, Barack Obama himself took up the argument about the size of Wasilla, pointing out that Wasilla has approximately 50 employees, while his own campaign has 50 times as many, or roughly 2,500.

McCain's campaign fought back hard after Obama told CNN on Monday that Palin's level of experience as a former mayor of tiny Wasilla, Alaska, did not match his own, citing the size of his campaign.

"My understanding is that Gov. Palin's town, Wasilla, has I think 50 employees. We've got 2,500 in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe $12 million dollars a year -- we have a budget of about three times that just for the month," Obama had said.

The McCain campaign released a copy of Palin's Republican voter registration card to rebut a report in The New York Times that Palin had been a member of the Alaska Independence Party, which wants the state to vote on seceding from the United States, for two years in the 1990s.

"The allegations that Gov. Palin was a member of (the) Alaska Independence Party are false. She's never been a member of the Alaska Independence Party," said McCain spokesman Brian Rogers.

So the NYT was caught lying about Palin. What else is new? What is abundantly clear is that the Left Wing smear machine is in full swing.

State records show the business ran into trouble with Alaska's division of corporations business and professional licensing after Palin became governor of the state in 2006.

A Feb. 11, 2007 letter to the governor's business partner advises that the car wash had "not filed its biennial report and/or paid its biennial fees," which were more than a year overdue.

The warning letter was written on state letterhead, which carried Palin's name at the top, next to the state seal.

On April 3, 2007, the state went further and issued a "certificate of involuntary dissolution" because of the car wash's failure to file its report and pay state licensing fees.

How can this woman be trusted to run the U.S. government if she can't even run a carwash in Anchorage with plenty of help?"

Before the Republican senator's presidential campaign disclosed the pregnancy of Palin's 17-year-old daughter, bookmakers in Britain and Ireland were offering 20-1 odds or higher on a bet that she would be forced off the ticket, meaning a 1 pound ($1.78) bet would pay 20 pounds. Now that same bet will pay no more than 8 pounds.

``While it is rare that a VP candidate gets dropped, it's not completely impossible,'' said Ken Robertson, political betting analyst at Paddy Power Plc, a Dublin-based gambling company. ``Lots of our punters are betting `Shocking' Sarah's days are numbered,'' he added, using a nickname he came up with for the first-term Alaska governor.

The odds, based on wagers made online with Paddy Power and William Hill Plc and in their betting shops, also suggest that McCain is less likely to win the White House because of his vice-presidential running-mate choice, announced Aug. 29. Risk of Stating the Obvious



The public discussion of the Palin nomination has settled into two contending storylines -- Palin as trainwreck of a poorly vetted nomination and Palin sending base conservatives and right-wing evangelicals into ascending heights of reactionary delirium.

But this is not as big a contradiction as it may appear.

The race to date has been characterized by two key facts.

First, the Democratic base is bigger than the Republican base. The number of self-identifying Democrats is substantially larger that the number of Republican-identifiers.

Second, contrary to what we might have imagined earlier in the year, Republicans have already been substantially more united behind McCain than Democrats have been behind Obama. I would not have predicted that. But the polls have been extremely consistent on this point.

In other words, the GOP 'base' was already substantially united behind McCain, subjective measures of intensity notwithstanding. The people who will win the election for McCain are disaffected Democrats and independents. In the context of 2008, a juicing-the-base strategy is a recipe for a respectable defeat, not victory.

I might add that in small towns, we don't quite know what to make of a candidate who lavishes praise on working people when they are listening, and then talks about how bitterly they cling to their religion and guns when those people aren't listening.

We tend to prefer candidates who don't talk about us one way in Scranton and another way in San Francisco.

The problem is that she comes across as a far-right social conservative. She didn't try to hide it at all (I will give her points for that) My wife and I were cringing during the speech. I would guess that to some extent, as progressives, we were reading between the lines.

I could be wrong about how moderate, independent voters will react. I have been surprised before (I completely don't get the appeal of Bush, for example)

In any case, the verdict will come soon enough. Maybe McCain and Obama will end up being tied again nationally (but not electorally) or maybe McCain will run away with the election.

My strong feeling is that her appeal is too limited and that people will worry that she is both too inexperienced and too socially conservative.

NOW, I am a life-long democratic woman who supported Hillary Clinton along with 18 million others. I keep hearing Democratic strategists declaring that we "disgruntled Hillary supporters" will not vote for McCain simply because he chose a woman to be his VP. But this is NOT TRUE!

Now what Americans needs to know is that I along with thousands of other Hillary supporters WILL be voting for McCain and Sarah Palin because we WANT to see a woman as VP and voters like myself see it as a brilliant move by McCain to reach out to us women voters.

The TVangelists threaten us of Roe vs Wade being overturn but fail to mention that both Bush administrations were Pro-Life and women still have the right to chose.

We have seen too many times MEN come on the National TV news and radio speaking on behalf of us women who have said that we Hillary supporters who are women will never vote for McCain and Sarah Palin because we don't agree with her stand on the issues? Why donesn't the sexist liberally biased media simply ask us women our opinion? Because they know that the mojority of women DO infact support Sarah Palin and will vote for her because she is a woman.

We are sending a message to our Democratic Party leadership like Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reed that THEY are not in charge of chosing our Nominee, WE the people are!

We are also embarking on a campaign with major womens groups to boycott and email our dissatisfaction to the editors of these sexist news networks who have been and who currently are being sexist towards Sarah Palin, Hillary Clinton and women in general. These networks include US Magaziine, Rolling Stone, and Mens Journal.

We women are not going to "fall in line" behind Obama who has less experience then Palin in public office. At least with McCain and Palin they have proven that they can actually bring about change in our government and not just talk about it. As a woman I can't beieve that it is the Republican Party who chose a woman as their VP. It shows the sexism that exists in our current Democratic Party and it is disgraceful!

I am proud to be one out of the 18 million of us so called "Disgruntled Hillary supporters" who will be voting for McCain and especially Palen now that McCain has shown the courage to chose a woman and his VP. The Obama campaign had been sexist towards Hillary and we women are not going to tolerate it anymore.

We are asking other Democratic women to join us in sending a message to our Democratic Party Leadership and the sexist liberally biased media that THEY do not chose our Nominee by intimidating elected Delegates into voting for THEIR choice. Vote McCain/Palin!
